I get all my glass jars from Ikea, I normally pick a couple up every time I go. I've got a few of the sweetie type jars for teabags & coffee:

I like the clip top ones for other dried food:

You can pretty the jars up with nice labels too:

These are brilliant - lovely labels (and website). Thank you very much!0 -
Hi all, have just managed to catch up with the thread whilst eating lunch.
The new yoghurt starter worked a treat. Forgot to add the 2 extra tablespoons of dried milk for thickness and it seems about the same thickness as usual so that's a few pennies saved on each batch in future. And guess what it's stored in? Yup a Le Parfait half litre clip jarPicked up 2 for 30p each from a CS earlier this week to add to my collection.
Thunderstorms forecast for this afternoon so have peeled back a section of the weed suppressant on the new "allotment" so the ground gets a soaking and will plant out all my butternut squash tomorrow. Don't think they will amount to much - I'm at least a month behind on everything this year - but they will cover a lot of ground and keep the weeds down.
The Co-op flier has arrived and there's a VG offer on looroll so I'll be stocking up on that as my under-the-bed-shop is running low. None of the other offers meet my price criteria and most of them are for processed stuff anyway which I don't buy much of.
Have already walked TB so no need to go out in the rain and am going to settle down with the Shirley Goode and Round About a Pound books whilst watching a bit of the cricket
Have a good one everybody

Been shopping in neighbouring town & went into HABS for a nosey & they have 4 tins of chopped tomatoes for £1.00. Didn't need so didn't buy but hope this is of help to some of you.
Restrained myself from looking in the cheap bookshop today so that's good. Did look in CS shops but luckily no books I Fancied.
Came home to find sundried tomato bread had finished cooking so have had a slice of it warm from the breadmaker. Delicious! (probably get indigestion now but worth it).
Bought a jar of sundried tomatoes & a jar of small red bell peppers from the cheapo shops so I can make some more. Have plenty of jars of olives in the cupboard so fancy making olive bread next.
Have just checked my Easiyo yogourt & it has set nicely so have transferred it to the fridge to chill. Will try it on my breakfast muesli tomorrow.
Have seen on here that some of you make yogourt in the Easiyo from milk & a starter of yogourt from the previous batch so will try that when I have used up the 4 packets that came with it.0 -
Well - actually the Benefit Cookbook is also 1980s and she quotes the price of goods back then - and there isnt that much difference to what food costs now.
EDIT: just reached that book off my bookshelves (yep...yet another book I have in my "library"....) and its "How to feed your family for £4 a day - the benefit book" by Bernadine Lawrence and to quote:
hi Ceridwen I remember The Benefit book by Bernadine Lawrence .....a very interesting read. Sadly I no longer have it.
And I used to like Shirley Goode.

They tend to be community run initatives which buy in bulk (and therefore cheaply) and sell on pretty much at cost price.
More details here:
http://www.sustainweb.org/foodcoops/about/
And how to track down your local one here:
http://www.sustainweb.org/foodcoops/finder/
I found a local one that does fruit and veg. The prices are cheaper than the supermarket, they do free delivery if you spend more than £5, and you can just order what you like, when you like (i.e. no requirement for a weekly order or whatever).
In case you hadn't guessed - I'm a huge fan!0 -
:eek::eek::eek:
I go away for a few days and there are 20, yes 20 pages to catch up on. By the time I've got through those, there'll be another 20. I'm doomed
Oh well, better get going:D. Housework can waitIt doesn't matter if you are a glass half full or half empty sort of person. Keep it topped up! Cheers!0 -
I'm going to the seaside with elderly parents, DH and the dog tomorrow. Would you all kindly talk a bit slower or shout louder so I can hear you, or I'll never be able to catch up again.0

I just turned the tv on for a bit and ascot is on and it is making me feel a bit `down`. We all feel pretty safe and self contained in our mse bubble, we are like minded and together we struggle to keep our own little worlds afloat
It just struck me how very much of a divided society we really are, I am seeing dresses and hats which cost an absolute fortune and an awful lot of people who exist on another financial level altogether. I suppose I just didn`t appreciate how many very wealthy people there are in the uk
Oh well. I`ll shake it off now and get back into my own bubble, where I am very content. Life goes on0 -

Are they though Kittie, I mean we just don't know how many of those frocks have been bought on a credit card. Maybe people who were wealthy 10 years ago may not be as wealthy now but living the same to keep up the façade, on credit?
I look at my in-laws, flashing the cash going to ladies day at the drop of the hat (no pun intended) and I know they're racked with debt problems. Their mortgage is like a noose but to everyone else they have to be seen to be still living the high life, they can't afford it but they're not slowing down *lifts nose in the air* "oh no dear, we possibly can't allow the minions to think we're struggling" It's laughable.
I don't envy them at all but I tell you what I do feel.......... inferior, dull, plain etc. I wish I could shake those feelings because I know I shouldn't feel like that.0 -
I think that is a bit of an unfair generalisation. I go to ascot. I've worn the same outfit hat 5 years running and we take a picnic and some sparkling wine. For me its my birthday present from my parents and I contribute the picnic. It's not really that different from going to the cinema/getting a takeaway. Only I save to do it just once a year because its what I enjoy doing.GC Mar 13 £47.36/£1500
