Defaults

A few years ago, I got myself into a bit of a mess with my finances and defaulted on a loan. I am now trying to improve my credit rating but obviously it is bad because of the default. Is there anything that I can do with regards this default to improve my credit rating? How long will this appear on my credit file? I have a full-time job and earn approx £25,000 a year and have never missed a payment on all other debts I currently hold.
Any help/advice would be appreciated.
