You dont specify a budget so the ideas may be wide of the mark but here goes....all hopefully incorporating red

A simple meal out in a resturant with a bottle of red wine..
    bottle of ruby port
a family party with a red theme
a curry if thats their thing
tickets to the theatre..possibly something like wizard of oz...red shoe connection
    red roses
an ornament or vase in red
A digital photo frame filled with photos spanning their 40 years...you may need to ask for contributions from family and friends to fill it with great photos
Something like a red rose or plant for the garden if they are green fingered

you could also investigate the possibility of having a whole family photo taken to celebrate the family they have gained over the years...children grandchildren
frugal October...£41.82 of £40 food shopping spend for the 2 of us!

    2017 toiletries challenge 179 out 145 in ...£18.64 spend

Case of red wine for your Dad, large bouquet red roses/perfume for your mam, and a nice meal for the two of them, or theatre tickets?
