We have Hugh Fearnley-whittingstall's Family Cookbook - (we bought it for DD2 as she enjoys cooking.) It's simply set out and very easy to follow and nothing from it has ever failed.....just don't make the cookies if you're on a diet!
Take heart - it took me years to learn to make gravy properly..... and my OH still makes better Yorkshires than i do.
I think Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall's books are very good. I got the Family Cookbook when I first moved to the UK and found it very, very helpful. I like how he explains what all the ingredients do. This empowers you to experiment.
I'd say that until you're really confident, you should follow recipes exactly for a while.:beer:0
