State pension in the UK and Ireland

I was talking to a neighbour today who is coming up to retirement in a few years.

He has worked the last 25 years in the UK and was working in Ireland before that. His plan is to retire in Ireland

The question is: is he entitled to a pension from the Irish system (which is over €400 per week for a married couple ) or the UK pension, which is substantially less generous.

Which one / combination would he be entitled to?

Sorry, I have no answer to your question, but 400 euro a week? Wow! Can't see it lasting, though, if and when the Germans decide that they really do want their money back, and invade with several brigades (or maybe an enire division) of accountants.

Get him to ring the DWP up, they will be able to tell him.

If he has only worked in the UK for 25 years he will get only a part pension, 30 years contributions is required for a full one,
unless of course he can contribute for another 5 years to bring it up to full.

No idea about the Ireland pension though. Presumably he wouldnt have paid a full entitlement there either.

    DWP is the best way,
make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.

You cannot make comparisons without taking the cost of living into account.
