3 Mobile debt collection

Hi,

I received a letter today (April 2nd 2011) from 3 mobile saying I owed them £62.99 on a contract I started in October 2006 and subsequently cancelled in June 2007.
I bought myself out of the contract via Carphone Warehouse and as far as I was aware, this contract was dead and buried.
They said I have 20 days to pay, and can call an 0845 no to do this, or they will pass the 'debt' on to Lowell Portfolio Ltd.
I have not heard from 3 since I cancelled that contract (even though they say in their letter that they have tried to contact me!) so am very sceptical as to whether this debt even exists
I have also checked my credit report on Equifax and there's no mention of any credit from 3 or the like. Does anyone know if this means there is nothing against my name for 3?
I really don't want to pay this, but on the other hand, I don't want to be blacklisted!

Any advice would be appreciated,

Thanks,
Gail

I would suggest you send 3 the prove it letter which asks them to prove you owe this money so they'll let you know what period is relates to and how the charge came about. Then you can decide whether or not to pay.

Just because a debt does not appear on any of your credit files does not mean it doesn't exist.

I think you will have received the money to terminate the contract early from The Carphone Warehouse, then you would be expected to contact Three yourself to cancel and pay the early termination fee. This is what Phones4u did when I upgraded with them. Did you do this?
  • I've had a similar letter from 3 this week, with regard to an account that was in dispute over 2 years ago. They have also added on an early termination fee of over £400.

They had tried to charge me for downloads that were supposed to be inclusive, and when asked to supply a full itemised bill they kept refusing.

I refused to pay the bill until they sent this, and so they cut me off and I never heard from again, until now.

They say I've got 20 days to pay or it'll be handed to debt collectors.

Any advice anyone can give will be greatly appreciated.

not the best of ideas, pay it then dispute it otherwise they will just escalate. Did you get online or paper bills? Also inclusive addons would be on your welcome email
Don't put your trust into an Experian score - it is not a number any bank will ever use & it is generally a waste of money to purchase it. They are also selling you insurance you dont need.

I really do not believe some of the "advice" you are giving people.

I'm not paying them jack! Firstly I don't have that kind of money just spare. Secondly I was looking for advice with regard to how to argue them down; such as any legislation anyone knows, whether it's legitimate for them to add these fees, anyone who's had similar, fought them and won, that sort of thing.

If I pay them I've no chance of EVER seeing the money again.

If the OP pays it they'll be off and there will be no "disputing it"!

I have to face same position from 3 mobile for early cancellation. They have started sending letters and ballif threat to one of my friend's house. My friend is worried. What should he do?

I don't know how they get his address. Where should he go.
