New job - advice needed

Hi all

I dont work at the moment and I am looking for an evening job that I can fit around my family. I am thinking of a pub, shop, garage or something similar. Ideally I would like to work about 10-15 hours a week and dont really want to work daytimes. Most of these jobs seem to get passed on by word of mouth rather than being advertised.

Any tips for finding something?

I did wonder about a shop near us that is being converted into a restaurant at the moment, it looks like it is nearly ready to open. I wondered if they were going to need staff. Should I put something through the door or wait until they are open and go in?

Never looked for this type of work before so any advice would be great.

I'd be knocking on their door today with CV in hand asking to see the owner/manager. Ask them if they are hiring, whether they are using a specific channel to find staff (eg through the local jobcentre etc) or if they have an application form.

I would expect them to have all the staff they need by the time it comes to opening night. Don't miss the boat.

Worst they can say is no.

I would be inclined to visit the places you want to work in person - ie. nip into the local pub and ask if they want bar staff etc, same goes for the local restaurant, stick your head around the door and ask and do this before they open because it is likely that once they open they will already have staff.

I would also suggest visiting these places during the day when they aren't busy. Asking for work during Happy Hour will likely get you nowhere.

When looking for work you only need remember these two words....

    Be proactive.

Thanks for the advice. You are absolutely right DizzleUK about being proactive. I keep making excuses not to do this because I dont have a lot of confidence and I think I am being a bit half hearted about it.

I have been off work for a while as a carer. My long term plan is to go back full time (or nearly full time) to work if I can fit this in with my sons health problems. If I dont do some kind of work soon its going to make it so hard for me to get back in the future.

Anyone out there been a stay at home Mum or carer who went back to work? I am in serious need of a bit of encouragement - or possibly a gentle kick up the backside.
