Hi,

I am in the same position, I currently own a Sony VGN-NW20SF as I love Sony's, however the processor on that Sony isn't as good as the others you have posted for the same price.
I think the Sony and the Packard Bell is the best lookers.
I am thinking about purchasing from Sony website and customised my own laptop

    Laptop VPC-EB4C - Configurable

500 GB Serial ATA (5400 rpm) hard drive
    6 GB 1066MHz DDR3-SDRAM
    DVDrw disc drive
    39.4 cm LCD, 1366x768 + webcam
    Intel® HD Graphics

It depends on how much you've got to spend and what you need it for really. I do computing at university so I need a good spec.

    Good luck !

Also, Toshiba's screen display tends to be dull I find compared to other laptops. Hope I'm not offending any Toshiba lovers out there! Out of the ones posted I'd definitely go for the Acer Aspire 5742 Laptop, Intel Core i5, 2.66GHz, 4GB RAM, 500GB with 15.6 Inch Display, as it's an I5 and 2.66ghz! Just generally better value.
... But you did say it doesn't look that good, and I think that it's important to look good too!

I just bought the Toshiba C660. My laptop broke and I needed a replacement in a hurry, which meant I couldn't shop online so I was really limited to Argos or Currys. I got the C660 from Argos for £350, it has the same processor as the model you found but 2GB RAM and 320GB hard drive. If you don't need the hard drive space I think it's a better deal as you can upgrade the RAM to 4GB for about £20 (I intend to as soon as I get my next student loan installment).

One of the reasons I chose it was that the keyboard has a full numpad, although ironically my one criticism is the keyboard- it's kind of springy.

Overall I'm very happy with it though.

Thanks for the advice people, I think I have narrowed my search a little after extending my budget to either of these 2 which work out about £550 each with cashback, codes etc

Anyone have any recommendations on these?

    HP DM4 http://www.comet.co.uk/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/p/Laptops/buy-HP-DM4-1150EA-Laptop/676519#fulldetails

    Dell XPS 15
    http://www.dell.com/uk/p/xps-15/pd?oc=n00xl523&model_id=xps-15

They both get good reviews and look pretty decent

John Lewis do 2 year warrant as standard, not sure how Sale of goods act comes into effect here.

The only laptop I have bought was bought from currys, lasted 2 years before the screen stopped working, it had a 1 year guarantee, fujitsu wanted to charge £140 to repair it, would sale of goods act have covered me?

I doubt it would to be honest, I guess thats why they charge so much for the extended warranties.
