insurance and prgnancy

I just want to put my mind at rest.
A few years ago when I was pregnant I had payment protection on my barclaycard (I had the card before I got pregnant)
Unfortunately I became ill with pre-eclampsia and was taken out of work, as I was not working and put on sick pay, I contacted barclaycard and explained that I was unable to keep up with the repayments but could I use my payment protection-I was told no, as because I was pregnant the illness was self induced, and the insurance did not cover this!
I was eventually (after a lot of begging from me!) put on a repayment plan, which has seriously affected my credit rating.
Lately a lot of people have been telling me that this is wrong and that I should have been allowed to use my insurance until on maternity leave, does anyone know if this is true?
As I have had a lot of bother with barclaycard since then.
Thankyou.xxx

  • WHAT????? How the hell is preeclampsia self induced!!! Flippin idiots. I don't suppose you got a sick note or anything stating that you were unable to work due to preeclampsia? If not it's going to be very hard to prove that you were unfit to work and eligable to claim on the PPI as it'll be your word against theirs.

A lot of ppi's have a clause stating that pregnancy or illnesses/conditions that are a result of pregnancy (both while pg and after) aren't covered by the insurance. It's really common :(

It might be worth getting a copy of the policy and taking it to the CAB to see if they can advise but unfortunately I think you won't be covered :(

    Well my sentiments exactly! lol.
I actually said to them over the phone (sarcastically of course!) "oh yes I did want to get pregnant In the hope of "getting" pre-eclampsia so I didn't have to work but could endanger my babies life and mine for some insurance!"
I don't have anything from work but it's on my hospital notes as I was induced due to the pre-eclampsia.
Looks like I would have a long and massive fight though by the sounds of it!

  • Hi there,

A lot if not all of the insurance policies exclude pregnancy related illness, I was off work with Hyperemsis (was sick constantly for 8 weeks) I spent 4 weeks in hospital on a drip but as you say the pregnancy was self-induced so I was entitled to nothing to help cover the mortgage.
