Recommendations for Digital Camera

Can anyone recommend a decent digital camera for £150 or under? Our old one has given up. My OH is keen to get the Canon Sureshot, is this a good camera or can anyone suggest a good alternative?

All recommendations taken into consideration!

Cheers, Birdy

Canon are good, no question, but there are a lot of other good makes out there too, and only by going out and looking, then going home and doing your research, will you really know what suits you best. Don't be won over by a massive pixel-count - unless you intend to print to A3 size and beyond, you don't NEED 12mp, and you may as well pay less for a lower count, and get a camera that is either better quality, or has better features.

Go, try, handle, work out what you fancy, then head home and hit the pricechecker websites to see what the best deal you can get is.

Thanks for the tip about the MP. You're right, I wouldn't be printing off any larger than A5 to be honest. The most I get round to doing is uploading them onto the computer and that's about it!

Would you say the Sony Cybershots are in the same league as the Canon Sureshots? Are there any other makes and models out there that rank alongside these ones?

I've just purchased a Panasonic Lumix TZ8 on Amazon. Just over £150 but very happy with it.

    Hi
i was also interested in a new camera in similar budget but would like at least 10-14x zoom.

Was interested in the Samsung WB600 ~£120, but mixed reviews on video recording

Fuji JZ300 ~£120 but its a 2009 model but appears to take good shots. This is £75 at Fuji online shop.
They have the Fuji F80 refurb at £109. Both have 10x zoom but i am not sure what the other tech differences are.

but not selected a camera yet, so dont mind if i see any suggestions on this thread.

Anyone else bought from Fuji shop online before?

(if you register they send you a nice 10% discount code!)

My first port of call when looking for a new digital camera is http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/ It basically covers all types from pro to beginner and has very comprehensive reviews. Once I've narrowed down what I'm actually interested in, I seek out a shop where I can handle the camera and test it out. I think one of the most important things with a camera is how it fits in your hand and how comfortable it is to hold. I find a heavier camera easier to hold steady than a lighter one and some cameras I simply cannot wrap my fat fingers around comfortably, but as everyone is different; it is hard to make recommendations (Though I do like Canon ;))
It is also worth checking that it is portable enough for you. It doesn't matter how good quality a camera is if you always leave it at home because it is slightly too big to put in a pocket. If you are not going to print out much (or large) 6mp is ample - a good lens will do more for your pictures than a high mp. And don't forget the memory cards you already have. Though they aren't expensive these days, you could still be looking to pay an extra £10-20 on cards if your new camera isn't compatible with the ones you have.

Come on people, it's not difficult: lose means to be unable to find, loose means not being fixed in place. So if you have a hole in your pocket you might lose your loose change.

I recently bought a Canon A1100 IS - it's absolutely brilliant. It's currently on Amazon at twice what I paid for it but I think it's worth shopping around.
I believe this model is now actually discontinued, but I particularly wanted a viewfinder, as I find it difficult to see the screen on a very bright day, and I find it easier to hold the camera steady if I hold it up to my eye with my fingers touching my face. There are only a couple of cameras now that have viewfinders.
I bought it from here http://www.buyacamera.co.uk/ You might find it worth checking what they have available - their prices are very good.
