Very very old "alleged" debt

I recently received a phone call out of the blue from a company called Sanclare Financial claiming I owe money (£233.88) on a loan I took out whilst living in Bristol (10 years ago!). The loan was with HFC bank and lasted 3 years. I definately paid off this loan and never missed a payment. I even recall receiving a letter from HFC when the loan was about to finish saying so. I didn't keep this letter...
I have since moved about 5 times and am not sure how Sanclare have got my number. I stupidly gave them my new address so they could send me details of this alleged debt.
I rang them after receiving the letter to say this loan was from about 10 years ago and I wasn't paying them. I asked for details of the outstanding debt and they told me to contact HFC bank. I contacted HFC who say they need more of my details i.e. my address in Bristol. I don't have this as only lived there for 6 months and don't remember!
I'm not sure what to do now and it's really stressed me out. I know I cleared the debt and am damned if I'm going to pay £233.88 to a company when they can't provide details of what it's for!
Can anyone advise me?
Thanks, Markyd

Either way the debt will be statue barred now as over 6 years old so tell them to go jump.

    As above.

If you are particularly anal, like me, download the template letter, send it without a stamp (they will go to the PO to collect it just in case it is a cheque) and get them to waste even more money by replying to confirm that they can take no further action.

They're chancers, tell them to go get shafted.

  • Thanks for your reply's. I think I like the "tell them to get shafted" advice the best.
I'm not stressed anymore, just angry....
