Old overdraft debt - Help!

I've recently had a debt company contact me regarding an old overdraft I had with Barclays going back about 10 years when I closed the account.
The overdraft was originally £350 but with interest it is now up to £800.
Not heard anything in all this time (moved house three times since) and it has now just materialised.
I've been looking at the stat barred thingymabob and it seems to me this debt collection company can no longer chase this debt (and they're being quite aggressive).
Is this right? I have a standard letter to send them to tell them this but I'm worried if I send it, it will just aggravate them and they will start proceedings against me.
I don't want people to think I'm shirking my responsibilities because I did offer them £50 a month to start with and they refused but th emore I've looked into it, the more I think I can tell this nasty company to do one!
Would really appreciate your help on this matter people!
Many thanks

Yes Limitations Act covers all unsecured debt for which no CCJ is outstanding.I all have learnt is from others on many sites.
Seek legal help if unsure.

Send the statute barred letter, and see what happens.
If they were idiotic enough to take action against you, then the debt being statute barred would be a complete defence to the court.Free/impartial debt advice: National Debtline | StepChange Debt Charity | Find your local CAB

Not quite clear as to whether the offer of £50 per month went to Barclays or the debt company but, if the latter, then the OP seems to have acknowledged the debt and therefore it would no longer be statute barred.
If the offer was made to Barclays 10 years ago, then SB rules would still apply.0 -

Well no
SB debts can only be reopened when 2 things happen.
Payment is shown on the account
OR
you write a letter and sign it saying yes yes yes this is my debt.
By saying you will offer £50 over the phone does not reset the SB clock.
If and this is an if, the debt was SB when payment was received or letter sent the debt is still SB.
Nothing will make a SB debt unSBd even payment or a letter.I all have learnt is from others on many sites.
