Incorrect equifax file

Hi i am in a real panic. I just checked my equinox file and there is a virgin mobile account showing as defaulted in 2007. It is in my maiden name and first went into arrears in jan 2005. It shows as two payments in July 2006 then goes into arrears again until it defaults in may 2007. It has my name and my date of birth but I'd not mine. I have had a mobile in my husbands name since 2006 and before that I had a pay as you fo phone.

The reason I'm panickIng is that I have to buy a new car next month and this has dragged my credit rating down from excellent to fair. I have to hand back my company car and so absolutely cannot delay in buying a new one.

What can I do. I'm crying as I write this as I can see this is going to be a real problem.

Please help

So, you have never had this Virgin account?

    So....

    1) Contact Equifax and put in a formal dispute on the entry, stating that the account is not yours and that you have never had such an account.

    2) Contact Virgin direct to do the same via their own complaint channels. Maybe by phone or email at first, but if you have no luck quickly then do it formally in writing.

Oops! Had an old tab open with a thread that referred to vodafone.

I'm going to ring them as soon as they open. I used to have a virgin mobile pay as you go card, but there is no way it can relate to that. And anyway that was years ago, I stopped using that in 2004 ish and certainly never made any payments to Virgin in 2006.

Does anyone have any idea how long things like this take to sort out?

First thing you should probably do is calm down, take stock, and get some perspective on this. It's really not a problem worth crying about.

Then follow the good advice above and take the issue up with both Equifax and Virgin in a calm and considered manner. Getting worked-up and upset isn't going to help anything.
