Pine Nuts and Bad Taste

I thought I would share with you all a topic that has recently been on a dental forum I subscribe to.

There seems to be a problem with batches of pine nuts which have come from China.

Some supermarket brands of pine nuts contain them, some don't. Look on the ingredients to see if a country of origin is mentioned.

These rogue pine nuts seem to have a bad effect on the tase sensation of certain people (Not everybody).

Patients can report a very bitter taste sensation which can last between a few days and 3-4 weeks.

This blog entry explains it well.

How to find a dentist.
1. Get recommendations from friends/family/neighbours/etc.
2. Once you have a short-list, VISIT the practices - dont just phone. Go on the pretext of getting a Practice Leaflet.
3. Assess the helpfulness of the staff and the level of the facilities.
4. Only book initial appointment when you find a place you are happy with.

    Right - Thanks for that.

It's just I read a post on here today about someone being recommended tablets by his dentist for a funny tase he'd been having.

I didn't want to post on that thread, as I obviously haven't seen that patient, so the recommendation of those tablets might be perfectly correct.

But a lot of people do end up gong to the dentist if they exprience taste disturbances - and not every dentist is aware of this problem. (It has been in the media on and off for the past 3 years though it would seem!

I just wanted to raise the profile of the problem again.

If you have a funny bitter taste for no apparent reason - check what you've been sprinkling on your salad first!

It's not a common problem but welding galvanised steel without using proper fume extraction can also give a nasty metallic bitter taste that lasts a few days as well.

    Definitely not to be recommended.

I had this about a year ago: I got a sample of some seeds in a pack from the Vitality Show and think this is what caused it. I have a very boring diet, eat the same things day in day out and have done so for years (the long term side effects of having an eating disorder and living off 'safe' foods). It was therefor easy to see any alterations in my diet and sampling part of the pack of seeds which contained (amid other seeds) pine nuts it was easy to spot the difference!

I ate the pack over the month (bit by bit on my porridge) and noticed the rest of the day everything thing tasted vile! Bitter and slightly metalic. Bit of research and I realised it was the pine nuts!

It is horrible, everything that was previously fine to eat tastes wrong: its a bit like trying to eat an apple straight after brushing your teeth. It happened about 3 times whenever I ate the pine nuts but the final time lasted a good few days and was what made me realise something was up.

I did read though that it was to do with a certain variety of the pine nuts. Either they are picked too early or its a certain variety, they look smaller then the rest and may be slightly greener/look more unripe.

It does go away though so don't give up hope if this happens to you!

    I have also had this.

A few month ago I bought Stark Naked pesto, which was an expensive fresh pesto and then a few days later every time I ate something this disgusting metallic taste exploded through my tastebuds ( only way I can explain it).

As soon as I googled it, I knew this was it. Mine didn't last too long, maybe a week but it's put me off pine nuts for life. It really got me down and I'm really disappointed that something I bought that marketed itself as a quality product, is using really cheap ingredients.
