I wanna get sky plus or a DVD recorder or do I need both?

A really stupid question I'm sure but, mIL has offered to buy us a dvd recorder for xmas. I'm not sure if we are better off just getting sky plus, but I have no idea!

Does sky plus have a monthly subscription? does it record? To be honest we don't watch or tape an awful lot of stuff, but do find that things we'd like to watch are often on at odd times or clash with something else.

We have basic sky at the moment approx £20 per month and advice on this would be appreciated.

Thanks
Bobsa

    Is Freeview acceptable to you?

If so, you could consider this:

    http://www.amazon.co.uk/Sony-80GB-RDRHXD560S-HDMI-Recorder/dp/B000H5U3U0/sr=8-1/qid=1164578389/ref=sr_1_1/202-2107131-5955806?ie=UTF8&s=electronics

It has an 80GB hard drive, twin Freeview tuners, and a DVD recorder. NB I don't think it actually has HDMI on it, despite what the description says.

At £250 it would only cost you the same as a year's Sky basic subscription and would do all the clever pausing and programme guide things that Sky+ does, albeit I don't think you can automatically skip adverts.

I don't actually have or use Sky+ though so I can't really comment on the merits of one or the other, merely suggest that you consider both options.

the sky+ box will need new cabling and a new lnb as it has two tuners. So you would need to pay an installer (or sky). You can easily check their current rates on sky.com or by ringing them. Sky+ is a £10 month subscription unless you take two premiuim channels eg sports or films. It can record two channels at once and the HDD can store about 40HRs of tv .
