fozen mince compared to fresh

most of the time i try and buy my meat from the butchers.. as i find it is far nicer that supermarket stuff.... but ..as i realy do need to knuckle down and kick butt with my bills.. i have just come back from shopping... and have bought some frozen value mince £1.06 and also the tescos healthy living mince at £1.69

i think i have bought frozen mince only once , and that was years ago.... and i cant remember why i havent bought it since....

so do you feel its good value for money ? is it ok or is it like rubber? ..also do you feel the quality is good or not ?

also if i get on with it ok... where is the cheapest place to buy it ? as i find that i use a lot of mince....in meals during the week......

i must admit i have been lucky up until now.. as i have been getting loads of fresh meat courtesy of tescos r & r policy.... but i have noticed they are really on the ball now with their pricing... so pickings are getting very low...

i really do wish i could afford meat from the butchers all the time.....but i need to make cut backs... everywhere i can...

thanks...

  • I buy tesco value lamb mince (which is cheap!) along with tesco's own brand (but not value) fresh beef mince. When i make spag boll or shepherds pie (etc...) i use 1/3 fresh mince and bulk it out with the frozen mince so in a medium sized fresh mince pack, i can get three meals out of it.

when i buy fresh, i will cut it into thirds and freeze them seperatly ready to use so you dont have to defrost the whole lot in one go.

Depends what it is ... .minced ....? what?

With the butcher, you know what he is mincing. I never buy minced "anything" without knowing what it is.

You might have got a bargain - but you might have paid over the odds for minced "something or other" which might actually have cost you less at the butcher.

Speak to your butcher about mince - ask him for cheap, thrifty cut of meat that he can mince for you.

This might end up being a false economy. I would far rather have half a pound of minced steak, compared to a pound of minced "something" for the same price.

I Tried Frozen Mince Years Ago And Found It To Be So So So Fatty I Never Tried Any Other Brands-it Also Felt More Like Ground Beef Rather Than Minced.i Do Sometimes Use Frozen Veggie "mince" Eg Quorn Which Is Good.i Dont Know How Or Why I First Tried This As I Am Not A Veggie And Neither Is Any Of My Friends /family But I Use It Now To Bulk Out "real" Mince

  • I've tried frozen mince (Waitrose) and found it to be fatty and so finely minced to be mush and inedible. Perhaps others have had better luck but I 'll stick to buying it fresh. I know that I am probably more demanding than most when it comes to food - and I make no apologies for it. To each thier own.

  • I bought some frozen mince from Aldi's recently and it was cheap as chips and extremely good value. Never bought it before but would do so again.

Depends what your putting it really. If its cottage pie or something where the mince is more prominent i would personally use fresh. But if its for say a chilli or bolognaise that has mushrooms and peppers and onions and other stuff in so the mince is less prominent i would use frozen. (morrisons one is good)

I prefer frozen mince to fresh, as the frozen tends to "blend" better in bolognaise sauces and similar. But I hardly ever buy meat mince anymore, not since Mr T's stopped doing their frozen turkey mince. I only buy veggie mince now, as I find that meat mince tends to taste bad after it's been in the freezer for a while. Veggie mince seems to freeze much better, and it's better for the whole diet thing as well... Still love my meat though - not gone completely vegetarian just yet...

When I cook the frozen mince, I agree that sometimes its quite fatty. I usually just pour off the fat so surely that just as using good as lean mince at twice the price?
