Buying appliances/furniture for new home

Hi there,

Me and my partner have just bought a new house, however, we have been renting for ever so have no essentials like cooker, fridge, settee etc.

Does anyone know where there are any bargains on or where the cheapest place to buy stuff like this is, its a bit overwhelming!! :(

Many thanks for your help.

Helen

i would try gumtree but also near us (south-east) there are British Heart Foundation shops who sell good quality second-hand sofas and large ticket items cheaply.
could you not ask family members if they have spare furniture you could have (people love a clear out this time of year so you wud be doing them a favour especially if you could pick it up!)

We bought a fantastic brown leather sofa on Ebay for £70, it was secondhand but pristine and great quality.

It really depends on whether you want brand new stuff or if you're happy to go with secondhand. You can pick up lovely quality furniture from places such as Gumtree, Ebay and local ad papers.

Stores such as Comet and Currys have clearance/auction pages on their websites where you can pick up bargains.

Argos also has it's place if you're on a tight budget and want new stuff.

    Hope that helps.

Have you tried your local Freecycle group? It's like eBay but without the money. You can give something away or ask for something that you need, stops things going to landfill.

Also, many local authorities have furniture recycling projects where you can buy furniture or donate unwanted items to them.

ETA I think Freecycle is called Freegle these days

I use the Gumtree site to sell things as there are no costs involved at all.

    http://www.gumtree.com/

Some of my friends sell old furniture and electrical goods on gumtree and they are usually snapped up pretty sharpish.

You need to select your area, for me this is Manchester , maybe smaller areas won't have the same success.

Worth a go as there is no charges for use. I wouldnt hesitate to buy and sell on there but usually it ends up face to face not like Ebay.

For new electrical goods find a small local retailer who offers to match internet prices. You'll get a good deal and friendly local service
  • free cycle is brilliant - when we returned from overseas we got all sorts from there fridge freezer etc (we had given most of our things away via freecycle when we went abroad too) also I have found cookers, washing machines etc for needy friends - definately recommend it.
  • We're in the same boat, and have bought furniture and appliances from auctions (there's an auction house near us and some of the stuff no one else was interested in for some reason we got for £1!!!), charity shops, friends who were re-doing their places and gave us stuff for free, friends of friends who were moving overseas and selling their stuff cheap, and colleagues (there's a bulletin board at my work that people use for buying and selling). We also bought a few things new but shopped around a lot and bought in the sales. We got a couple of new leather couches for £150 each as the line had been discontinued, for example. My advice would be to try and take it slowly and live without certain things for a little while so you can buy when the deal is right. We still sleep on a mattress on the floor (which is surprisingly comfortable actually) as we haven't found the right bed yet. We also spent some time sitting on the living room floor before we found the couches.
