Council Tax for 2 rentals at same time for 5 days

Hello,

My OH and I are moving rental properties mid April from a flat to a 3 bed semi (both are council tax band D). We will have the keys for the new property from 21/04, but because we are terminating our contract early (and paid for it - eek!) we will still have the keys for the flat until we hand them over on 26/04 after the BH weekend.

We will declare that the council tax for the new house to start from 21/04, but what happens regarding the council tax for the flat after we move out on this date? It will be unfurnished and vacated by 21/04, we're just using the BH weekend to come in and spruce it up to guarantee we get our deposit back before officially delcaring ourselves out of the property. Can we fill out an "empty property" form to cover us for the 5 extra days the tenancy will be in our names?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated, thanks! :)

Your liability for council tax terminates either when your tenancy terminates, or when there is a new occupier, whichever is the earlier. However if the flat is unoccupied and unfurnished then it will be exempt from payment for up to 6 months.
If you are querying your Council Tax band would you please state whether you are in England, Scotland or Wales

If you don't hand the keys in then you are responsible for council tax until the date you do, ie the date the tennancy finishes.
Indecision is the key to flexibility :)
