hi caverncity
I must admit I'm intruiged(sp) by this, I tend to shy away from these shorts of gadgets usually as it tends to be a case of 'the cheaper the item the more expensive the consumables' -- but I do like my coffee.
Just wondered if you had one of these yourself? Are their many manufactureres of the pods do you know, or just that brand?
I've never really heard of them before, just wondered if they were liable to be defunct in 12months time, or if their are different coffee brands available, possibly at more competitive prices, or can you somehow use your own blends in it reusing the pods somehow do you know?
Cheers for any additional info0 -
Not sure if it is any help, but here's what I have found out.
The machine should take most Pods, but may need a little manipulation to get the different sized pods to fit snuggly. The Douwe Egberts Senseo pods are widely available in supermarkets, and Illy, Uno:Uno etc. all do pods as well as the online sites posted earlier.
Cost of consumables is high, allegedly Uno:Uno costs nearly double Senseo, and the Senseo pods work out at £1.75/100g at my supermarket. Where as the same coffee without the pod is 86p/100g.
You can fit pods in a conventional espresso machine, I've used the Senseo ones in my Krups (2 pods to make 1 double espresso). However in my experience the coffee isn't as strong, and the crema is thinner / more watery when I use pods (Douwe Egberts) over grounds (Lavazza).
Personally if you like coffee, it would be better to invest in an espresso machine that can take grounds. For example q-ed have a heavily reduced almost industrial espresso machine with milk throther for just over £40:
Delonghi EC410 BAR 41
You'll claw back the additional cost in a years worth of coffee purchases.
This will also take pods if you want, but can use proper coffee at a strength you like!

Hello,
The actual machine was sold in a few shops inc. woolworths, currys. argos etc. for £49.99 only problem was there was not many pods about for it, but you can still get them. Now the machine has been reduced heavily and thye are getting snapped up.
Luckily over the past 12 months shops are now selling senseo pods and kenco pods and if you want the more special ones just type coffee pods in google or yahoo. there are thousands of pages.
Personally I do like my coffee and have tried lots of instant, ground and pods and I find that I like the Kenco pods for £1.98 at asda. They fit in the Senseo and may even fit the UNO. The one above comes with a adaptor so can take two types of pod. The UNO only does one cup at a time where as the senseo does two. other than that they are practically the same.
The way I see it is for a decent jar of instant you are talking approx. £2.50 the pods for 18 are £1.98. On the net for 50 they are about £6.00+
Ok the ground is cheaper and will last and you get more choice but you get the mess.0 -
Some free pods here (expires on the 28th Feb):

Luckily I got hold of one of the Delonghis from valuetech for £30 and the coffee has been great (loose) - not convinced by these pods - the old polaroid business model...0 -

Already received a few bags of the pods free from kenco. Had them sent to family members.
I much prefer pods than loose, taste much better, however the kenco is much better than the senseo.
I have today just bought the Delongi 410 mentioned above at qed-uk for £50 inc. Seems like a great bargain, its coming saturday so hopefully its as good as it looks.
Now to find a supplier of cheap pods, if there is any in the net that sell approx. 50 for £5-£6 let me know.
thanks0 -
Many thanks for the really indepth info everyone
I'm still consdering what would be my best purchase
(and the free kenco link!)

Hmm, I just had a pod and it was pretty good - when you use loose are you 'tamping' i.e. squashing, the coffee down before you use it - it makes a big difference...0 -

Hello,
its been a long time since I tamped and squashed. Been using pods for a while now.
I have received my delonghi 410 from QED-UK for £41.53 reduced from £150
http://www.qed-uk.com/q?i=128LGw2Z29wa&vp=6&bg=325&bp=ec410b&bi=0
They are brand new factory sealed but I assume they are discontinued as the tin of 18 illy pods that came with it are nearly a year out of date. (still taste ok)
You get a lot for your money, its a big industrial type machine with two types of coffee holders. One for loose and one for pods. (see pic)
If you get the machine and follow the instructions beware the part where it says any excess wire push back into the machine. I did this and for the next 20 minutes or so I could not figure out why the water would not come through the filter. It just made a loud tinny pumping noise. It was ready to go back.
Then I realised it maybe that the wire I had pushed in had bent the pipes inside.
I pulled the wire back out and it worked perfect after that.
It is very easy to use and apart form the 40mm pods it will also take the kenco pods by using the other filter holder.
I have now ditched my senseo and am sticking with this as it gives me more choice of what coffee to use and it looks great.
You will not be disapointed. I ordered it Friday and got it Saturday morning.0 -
I bought a De'longhi EC410 yesterday from QED for £50.25 inc p&p and it came this morning. I've already used it and it is deffo worth considering. The coffee is hot and not tepid like some of the other types I've made sampled. The frother works really well and made a great cup of cappuchino. The EC410 has been replaced recently, but for the price it certainly is a good deal.0

Does anyone know what "pressure" the Delonghi EC410 operates at? (Usually expressed in "Bar")?Money Saving Fan.0
