Unpayed student loan
Hi
I have a student loan of around £12k still to pay back from my degree which i completed around 2002. When I first started working I was paying it back.
However, since I moved jobs 3 years ago I have not been paying it back, although I know I earn enough to do so.
I am happy to start paying it back but I am worried that if I go to the SLC I will be made to pay back that which I should have done over the last 3 years in a lump sum. With a young family I can not afford to do this.
I do not want to bury my head in the sand anymore.
Can anyone out there advise on what I should do?
Thanks
MJonno

This happened to me too. For the first year afer graduating I didnt earn enough, then for two years I did but didnt pay anything back. Then I went part time and didnt earn enough again, then when I increased my hours they automatically started again contributions. All this was with the same emploer, so I dont know why they missed me the first time. Anyhow, they didnt ask for any back payments for the time I wasn't paying.
My understand is the you should inform your employer, then they inform the SLC who start taking payments. I assume that the SLC would have no need to look into your past unless they were suspicious - they would just look at the info they are being sent now and calculate your payments. I asked this same question on here a few years ago when it happened to me and everyone advised me to let my payroll know for peace of mind if nothing else.I seldom end up where I wanted to go, but almost always end up where I need to be0 -
From my own experiance the only time they will backdate it is if you fill out a tax return as then the HRMC take the backdated amount and pass it on to the SLC. See https://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/discussion/3128738=0
