Can't get a mobile contract

in Credit cards
Hi,
I hope this is posted in the correct thread, I think it relates to my credit file not credit card.
The short story is I can't get a vodafone contract, the long story is...
Well I'm 30, private renter. Never use overdraft, live on credit card but pay off in full everymonth. Had a few loans in my life to buy car's and alway's paid back.
So why won't vodafone give me a contract. The reason I need to be on vodafone (currently on three) is that vodafone are the only provider that have a signal where we now live (been moved in 4 months and everything set up, bills, council tax, electoral role etc).
We have had letters for the previous occupant which look like companies requesting money for unpaid bills, we had one saying that our property was under investigation for TV license, but when I wrote to them they said it was the previous tenant they were chasing.
I'm guessing (as I'm a bit clueless about this) that this could be my problem. I've read up on credit files, but I'm a bit lost as to why mine would be bad enough to not let me have a vodafone contract (never done balance transfers etc...)
If anybody could make some recommendations on what steps I should take that would be really appreciated, because from looking online I'm a bit lost.
Many Thanks,
Darren

A previous tenants history/bad credit will not be affecting your credit rating as credit files are specific to an individual not an address. The only time you are linked to another person is if you have a joint credit account (mortgage, loan overdraft etc) with someone and in that case they could affect your rating.
If you don't know why you are being refused then i would suggest you get copies of your statutory credit reports to see what is on there. As you have moved fairly recently it may be that one of the CRAs doesn't have you showing as being on the electoral roll yet. If you are on the electorall roll on your credit files then check through everything else on the credit report to ensure it is all accurate.A smile enriches those who receive without making poorer those who giveor "It costs nowt to be nice"0 -
voda are normaly quite relaxed, are you on the electroll?0

Hi, thanks for you replies.
I filled in the electorol role form as soon as we moved so I would guess I'm on it! Is there anyway of checking?
Also do I have to get credit reports from every credit agencey or just one?
Sorry for been such a newb!
Many Thanks,

Its not unheard of for you to be on the register with the council but for one of the agencies not to have updated their files.
I would usually suggest checking experian and equifax (via the free trials or the £2 statutory reports) unless anyone knows and can advise which agency vodaphone checks.A smile enriches those who receive without making poorer those who giveor "It costs nowt to be nice"0 -
I tried voda with bad credit and not on electoral roll. I was surprised they offered me it if i paid £100 deposit to be returned in a few months of paying.0

My boyfriend had trouble getting a vodafone contract as he had very little credit history. They offered him a contract on the priviso that he paid £100 deposit that would be repaid after 4 or 5 months of regular payments of his bill.
Might be worth asking if they'll do something like that for you. It's definitely not previous tenants - there are a lot of myths out there about addresses being blacklisted but that's not the case.0 -

I had the same story:)
Now 6 years with Voda and I think I have the best contract ever! 900m, unlimited text, 500Mb of Internet, Vodafone International and Vodafone Passport, 12 months contract, sim-only - £12.02 +VAT0 -
my equifax report was instant, and everything is green apart from one late credit card payment in 2004! However I have a Red flag next to the electoral role, but it does say i'm on it with a length of 0 (zero) and is dated march 2011.
I'll try ringing vodafone tonight. If I keep trying to register for a new contract and get turned down does this go against me on my credit report or is that a myth as well?
Thank you so much for your replies, it is really nice of all of you to take the time and help a stranger.
Thanks,

Have you considered getting a 30 days 'contract', they are not so bad and can be upgraded?0 -
how long have you been at this, and the ones for the last 6 years?0
