Debt Collection Agency and Orange

Options
My OH has received a letter today from a debt collection agency; all of his loans were paid off 3 years ago (on my demand) so we were stumped as to what it was for, he called them and the lady said Orange.

We confirmed to her that the balance was paid over 3 years ago to which she went away to speak to her manager, came back said sorry for the trouble and that they'd contact Orange and we wouldn't hear back from them.

We both recall him getting an account closure letter, it's whereabouts escape us at the moment however I've checked bank statements and there is a record of a £282 cheque being paid on 03/05/07.

Where do he stands with this? Is it worth complaining to Orange?

Yes, I would complain to Orange. If the reply from Orange is not satisfactory you can escalate it with the ombudsman but to be honest I am not sure if the Financial Ombudsman or the Telephone Ombudsman would be your best bet, you'd have to ring one of them and enquire. Start with Orange though. You might like to mention that under the Data Protection Act 1998 they have an obligation to keep thier records up to date... Oh that's another thought DPA breaches are complained about to the Information Commissioner. You have a fair bit of Googling to do if Orange don't suck up suckily enough!
I refuse to be afraid of the big bad wolf, spiders, or debt collection agencies; one of them's not real and the other two are powerless without my fear.
(Ok, one of them is powerless, spiders can be nasty.)

As of the last count I have cleared
    [STRIKE]23.16%[/STRIKE] 22.49% of my debt. :(
  • Thanks Hannah, some things I'd let slide but this was a total bolt out of the blue and an unfounded one at that!
  • Apparently the company had reopened some old cases, seems a bit funny to me that they didn't check to see if the debts had been cleared. Perhaps the complaint should go to them directly for unnecessary distress.
