Prices for kids on NI public transport?

Hi, could anyone who's used to taking kids on Translink buses and trains give me an idea how they charge for kids? Are they free, 'halves', etc... are there cheaper times of day to travel?

Looking to take our two into Belfast for a day out this week and considering public transport if it doesn't work out too dear.

Thanks for any help.

Probably best to check out Translink.co.uk for fare details but I think fares are half price for children.

They don't quote fares on the website, you will need to ring.

For all Ulsterbus fares and other bus & rail enquiries, please contact our Contact Centre.

  • Question - are you using trains, metro or Ulsterbus?
NO MORE HANDWASH GLITCHES PLEASE :D:D
  • Under 5 are free, under 16? is half fares. That's for metro ... can't remember the exact fares, though depending on travelling distance will vary. I use metro everyday and ulsterbus almost every weekend for myself and 8yr old DS. I'm not sure about unlsterbus other than half price for DS.

Personally, if you're only going in for the day and you're using the metro I would get a day ticket.

Children under 5 free on all transport.

Metro Adult Day ticket normally £3.50 with 5-16year olds £1.75 however, if you purchase the ticket between 9.30 and 2.30 or on a Sunday its only £2.90 for adults with £1.45 for kids.

Bear in mind quite a lot of the car parks do deals on Sundays at £1 per hour or £3 ish for the full day. Depending on what you want to do, night time can also be an option - the parking in Victoria Square after 6.30pm is £3.50 until 8am next day so might be worth considering!!

Hope you have a good day whatever you choose!!
  • Thanks for all the replies - very helpful. :)

It would be useful if they included some basic pricing information on the translink.co.uk website.

We used the train to get from whiteabbey to carrick (left the car overnight after being at the pub) Myself, the wife and 2 kids - 6 & 2.
The train fare cost more than the taxi home the night before and the taxi driver took my babysitter home to fortwilliam as part of the fare.

The Translink website must be the worst public service website in existence! Yet another result of their almost total monopoly in NI.

They did used to have example fares on the website so I can only imagine they found it too much effort to change them every time their fares increased.
