in Cutting tax
ok read alot on the internet and alot of conflicting info based on different circumstances.
I'd like to know firstly if i am eligable and secondly which way to apply.
I lost my job january and had always been in paid work until that point. I started claiming JSA 18th or was paid JSA from the 18th of Jan 2011. I would like to know if because i have been recieving JSA i am no longer entitled to my tax back? and also whether i should go through the job centre to have my tax re paid directly into my account or do it all seperately by applying to the inland revenue.
What concerns me is how long and how much messing about i will have after reading other peoples experiences with the job centre.
i do have the necessary paperwork such as my P45 in its entirity and do know if applying it has to be after April 5th.
Thanks in advance
Paul

Why do you have your P45 in its entirity? You should have handed in one part of it (I can't remember which one) when you claimed JSA. If you had done and are still claiming at the end of the tax year I believe they arrange for any overpaid tax to be repaid. If you haven't given it in then I believe you will need to reclaim it after April 5th, but take a look here for more information http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/incometax/stop-work-refund.htm0

thanks for your quick reply, the reason i havn't handed it in yet is because when i claimed for JSA i didn't have it at that point and i have only just got it from my old employer.
So would it now be best for me to claim seperately after April 5th?

Yes - as you've run out of time otherwise. But - as JSA is taxable - HMRC won't refund you until they also have the JSA figures from Jan until 5th April.
Best to write to HMRC now (send the P45 but keep your copy) and get in the queue. If you want to test the depth of the water .........don't use both feet !0 -

I hate to contradict Mikeyorks, but here goes.
You will receive a P60U from the jobcentre in April detailing the amount of JSA received since you lost your job. At that point send in the P45 and the P60U
The reason why its no point sending in the P45 on its own, is the person doing the repayment will see that you have a claim for JSA, last year the P60U's from the DWP didn't HMRC systems until November, and many are still missing. So all that will happen is that they will write back to you asking for info. Better off to send all the info in one go.He's not an accountant - he's a charlatan0 -
thank you for all of your help it is much appreciated0

I have a similar question, I am thinking in advance here. I will be taking voluntary redundancy at the end of July and don't plan on claiming JSA straight away. Do you think it's better to claim my tax refund back straight away or wait until I stop claiming JSA say 8/9 months down the line? I just did a calculation and it suggests I'd get more back if I put it in before JSA. Although I guess at the end of the day it all works itself out anyway...
