As we have had a few period threads recently...

I have just read in a magazine that Tranexamic Acid tablets, that have until now been prescription only, will be available over the counter 'as of this month' (no exact date). It says specifically Boots but not sure if they sponsored the article or not.

This is a drug that helps blood to clot and can reduce blood loss from 29-58% and so ease heavy periods.

Hope this is useful for someone.

I had them on prescription at one time. You're not meant to take them if you have family history of DVT's. That was in the small print, my gp never mentioned it !

Meant to say that it did work in reducing blood loss. However personally I found it seemed to prolong the period by a day or two. This is just my experience though.

  • Not good for those with anti phospholipid syndrome, SLE, Sjogrens, RA, heart disease risk factors or a whole lot of other medical complaints. I wonder how many people will take it unecessarily and regret it later if it is so easily available? (bearing in mind that it is very rarely prescribed outside Gynae clinics in any case, and only if fibroids and other causes of menorrhagia are excluded first, along with platelet disorders, Von Willebrand's, ectopic pregnancy, PID, TB, Hypothyroidism and many others which are outside the scope of the average dispensing pharmacist's training).

It's never worked for me either, quite the opposite tbh :( Rather interesting they are putting it on the shelf.

Thanks op, I hope they help people.
Personally, I had so much pain with them I stopped using them.

Referral to gynae. Then they can assess the likely causes and appropriate course of treatment.

    Endometrial ablation, possibly.
