My son told the DWP he would be signing off jobseekers as he was going self employed..the Jobcentre rang to tell him he had forgot to sign on last week.he was supposed to sign on for the last time, but with being busy looking for work he completely forgot. the caller then went on to tell him that because he missed his signing on day he would have to stay on jobseekers allowance and continue signing on, I heard my sons part of the conversation, 'but I have lined up work for next week so I will not be able to sign on' caller went on to tell him he had to cancel his work and continue signing on son 'so you are telling me I cannot sign off the dole and start work next week, because I missed signing on' caller told him that was correct, son 'can I please speak to someone higher than yourself, my son then explained his situation to a supervisor who told him the same thing...HE HAD TO KEEP SIGNING FOR JOBSEEKERS ALLOWANCE for the next 26 weeks, then he could go self employed, my son went on to explain that he had work lined up and was told he must CANCEL the WORK to continue to sign on!!!!! If I had not heard the conversation I would not have believed it, the government are supposed to be getting people back to work but the jobcentre is encouraging them to stay on the 'DOLE'. my son has worked really hard to get this work does anyone know what will happen if he just goes to work and does not sign on thanks

So you overheard one side of a conversation, and you thought you would fill in the gaps with your own interpretation of what was said?

He needs to ask to see the rule that keeps him captive. He's not a slave.

Besides, as an uninformed opinion, I think they are talking rubbish. He's on JSA which means he's seeking work, and is required to do so. They're saying that if he finds work, he can't take it...... Nooooo!
What are they going to do if he starts work?.... Stop his JSA?

This is why I think the conversation has been recounted with some embellishment - the JCP do not want to keep people on benefits if they don't have to be!

What the JCP could have said is, now he has broken his claim, he will not be entitled to some grants that require a 26 week continuous claim. That would be correct.

Why is she upset? She did not hear the full conversation, so she was recounting it second hand.

Your 'mother' did state "I heard my sons part of the conversation"

Is it not reasonable to assume that as she did not mention she had also heard the other part of the conversation that she was indeed 'filling in the gaps'. :o

Don't see what there is to get upset about really. Seems silly to take a forum comment to heart, especially when it states what has already been stated by the OP herself in a different manner!
