I am 35 and have just finished paying off the mortgage - hurray! The feeling is great - to just know that your house is your own. We may invest in another property at some point but in the meantime we are saving the money we would have spent on the mortgage, using some for holidays abroad with the children.0

feel a bit of a fraud as we paid off our mortgage with inheritence - although we were overpaying a small amount anyway.
invested in another property (take possession tomorrow!!) - with small mortgage so back on the wagon!!
however, OH has had horrendous problems at work at may not be going back there - so owning our home is the best feeling ever as he has the security of knowing we can walk away and save himself the stress of returning to work and no-one can take away our home.
And went to Lapland with the kids just before Xmas - being able to do that was wonderful - the best thing about being mortgage free is the choices it enables you to make.0 -
What a nice thread.
Our plan is to move closer to my parents and in the country. Would like a nice amount of retirement savings and to be able to afford nice holidays. I dream of owning our own Florida Villa but that might be little more than a fantasy.Aiming to be Mortgage Free by 2022

Our MF date is likely to be sometime around April 2012 and we've spent many, many hours delighting ourselves in conversation about what we will be our long term plans when it is paid off....and it is constantly changing! However in the short term we are pretty much decided.
We're going to keep saving until December 2012 and then travel for three months. I've been in my job for over 10 years and OH in his for 4, so we're both going to ask for a short sabbatical. I'm pretty sure mine will be approved but OH works for a small IT company and may not (he wants out of there anyway, so no major loss!) Even if neither of us get granted sabbaticals we're going anyway! By Dec 2012, all going to plan, we'll have saved up enough for travelling and a cushion for our return to UK. We're planning on visiting Australia and New Zealand and a couple of other places en route.
When we get back it will be a case of returning to / getting new jobs and rebuilding the savings. Like many of you the long term plan is to save for a good deposit on our "dream" home and rent our existing home. But you never know, our long term plans change so often and who knows what we'll end up doing once we've got another chunk saved up!0 -
