Does this mean you won't be gracing your feet with old tyres cut into quarters then? :D
That was the most ridiculous thing I've ever seen.
In these days, even if you were to get that desparate that anything to cover your feet would do, you can always superglue a pair of shoes back together, or plug a hole with a glue gun.
They'll be incredibly uncomfortable to walk in, but then so will shoe-tyres.

I might check out the Make Do and Mend show, though.

I see from one of her blog entries earlier this week Ilona who posts on the forum from time to time will be on the show shortly.

:D Wotcher, Toasterman, I've got my work shoes glued together with superglue where the soles were parting company with the toes. Not a bit uncomfortable and at 10 small tubes for a quid, excellent value for money and took all of 2 minutes. Never give up until you've tried glue gun/ gaffer tape and/ or superglue.

I haven't seen yesterday's, but my 16 yo DD caught me watching last week's.

"Why are you watching that, Mum? Aren't they just stating the obvious?"

Oh, yes. The brainwashing is coming along nicely ;)

I wonder if some of us have been on here too long to enjoy the show? I haven't learnt anything new yet when it comes to the "saving money" tips.

I keep watching every week but to be honest I am not sure why:undecided

I needed the sort of advice on the show when I was first setting up home, but now I find most of it is too simple to be any help or else expensive eg you have to buy a banana to clean silver if you don't eat them, 13p per lemon (last time I bought one) to de-scale the kettle etc

    Still watch it though :o

Oh, and why go to Cardiff to interview children with Scottish accents? There was NOBODY with the genuine Cardiff accent involved!!

I'd like to see ideas on setting up a home on a tight budget, cheap organisation ideas (cereal packet files etc) and longer term money management ideas.
I can cook and sew, make flowers grow.
  • the ones I have problems with are those that get you to use a 'cheaper' alternative, when there are blindingly obvious items that are so much cheaper. For example:

Use bathcream instead of handwash -> what's wrong with soap?
spray perfume on cotton ball then pop it in the hoover -> couple of drops of essential oils (much cheaper) on the filter (no wasted cotton ball) will be much cheaper
onion 'sealed' with butter and foil -> or you could just pan fry the onion then freeze it.... no waste

and I agree with luxor4t, the banana and lemons, there are much cheaper alternatives.

(and yes, I still can't help watch the programme)

Yep...definitely given up on Superscrimpers here....

Total waste of time for me to watch it - and I don't rate it as a progamme for people generally.

I have now watched the "Make Do and Mend" programmes. Now - they are a decent watch. I have learnt nothing new personally so far - but you never know...and I do think they are a useful "watch" for peeps generally.

I thought this programme was rubbish too! its ok for basics but a lot of these ladies were still buying - to me going down to the dump to buy a crap old tray to decorate - to add more useless clutter to your house is just another way of not being able to support their shopping habit

and featuring nouveau-poor those really high-earners who can't manage their budget! If I were earning £100k per year I would have the life of a lottery winner! I don't think I would be able to spend i all - we manage our family of 4+bump on £28000 per year, do they want us to feel sorry for these people? I would prefer that they were giving this advice to new-mums, single parents, young people setting up their first home or people who had just been made retundant or just retired.

The shoe lady Weds night! why didn't she work full-time? she obviously enjoys spending her cash - maybe she gets has shoes cheap from the airport she works at, I have a pair of Jimmy Choo's in my collection - I got them from ebay for £30 second-hand and they have never before I find much more pleasure in a bargain then buying something I like for hundreds

EDIT TO THAT: Have just watched latest episode online and did learn a coupla things new to me - so yer never know...

    1. About how to make "toasted" sandwiches in a frying pan

    2. How to make "icecream" instantly with frozen fruit (would substitute honey or similar for sugar personally - but still plan on copying the idea some time).

EDIT: Re natlie's point - personally I do feel sorry for peeps who have been on reasonable income levels and find themselves unexpectedly (due to no fault of their own) in Queer Street - for some reason like having lost their job, had health problems, etc. Any of us could have fought our way up to a decent income or been lucky enough to have been born into a background where a decent income came pretty much automatically - but then something happened. So - I feel sorry for peeps who have "taken a hit" from just a reasonable level previous income (even though my own salary is poor - I never DID manage to fight my way through to a decent income.....boo..).

One thing that no-one has mentioned anywhere at all to my knowledge (either in the media or on MSE) is the plight of women who have gone ahead and retired at their 60th birthday (despite their State Pension Age having been raised). There WILL be women who have refused to delay retirement because of a raised SPA and some of them will be suffering because of not yet being in receipt of their State Pension. It may be that some of them have no income at all from anywhere - and are having to dig into savings and/or be "unemployed" and on Jobseekers Allowance. Maybe these women aren't really starting to show up yet? - because the SPA only started to phase in for women earlier this year - so there won't have been much income loss yet consequent on this. As the rest of the 5 year phase-in of this comes to pass - then more and more women who insisted on continuing to retire at 60 will be affected and, in a couple of years time, there will be women who will have to spend 2-3 years living on savings and/or being "unemployed" on benefit and that will really hit them then...

I think that the main reason I watch it is that there's not much else on at the time. We record "Midsommer Murders" as DH is out on Wenesdays.

I've a lot of knitting to do at the moment and I like to watch TV while knitting.
