Saturday November 25th 2006 is Buy Nothing Day (UK)

Having been going since 1993, it is the annual 'Buy Nothing Day' tommorrow.

http://www.buynothingday.co.uk/

"Saturday November 25th 2006 is Buy Nothing Day (UK), It's a day where you challenge yourself, your family and friends to switch off from shopping and tune into life. Anyone can take part provided they spend a day without spending!

This year our message is simple, shop less - live more! The challenge is to try simple living for a day, spend time with family and friends, rather than spend money on them.

Buy Nothing Day also exposes the environmental and ethical consequences of consumerism. The developed countries - only 20% of the world population are consuming over 80% of the earth's natural resources, causing a disproportionate level of environmental damage and unfair distribution of wealth. "

NO PURCHASE NECESSARY!
This year, Buy Nothing Day will be biggest 24-hour stand-off from the need to shop. People in around the UK will make a pact with themselves to take a break from shopping as a personal experiment or public statement and the best thing is - IT'S FREE!

I read this on another thread and I agree that it is a great idea, but I honestly can not see it succeeding so close to Christmas.
I'm not knocking the concept at all, and I hope it does make an impact.
If I'd remembered I would have done my shopping today, but we've got to go to the supermarket tomorrow as the fridge is virtually empty and we have run out of catfood.
I WILL support it in principle - by buying ONLY the essentials.

  • Thanks for the support folks, I did search the site for a previous mention of Buy Nothing Day but found nothing.

I've only known about it for the last 3 years, so was suprised it had been going 16 yrs.
Like most eco or any 'reduce consuming' events, it suffers from a lack of funding for advertising & a slagging from the usual retail / selling vested interests who refuse to see the crisis of diminshing resources before blind profit, so the truth will have to be faced eventually.

It is only for one day after all.

I was not sure if it was appropriate to post it on here as many are forced not to buy, due to indebtedness or poverty. But then I thought it would support them to see others who do not spend their lives 'keeping up with jones' and reduce consumption for other reasons like the environment.

Rog, I take your point about being too near to Xmas, perhaps October would be better.

Or maybe January would be better when no one has any money anyway! ;)
