Company refusing to accept me back FT

  • Dear guv

I am writing to you to appeal the decision to allow me back to work full time for the reasons detailed below
a - my contract as it stands still reads FT hours and I wish to work to my original contract again
b - I need to earn a full time wage and being that we are in a niche trade; I am unable to work for competitors
c - I have no intention of having any more children and as such, require full time working hours; the request for part time working was only ever intended to be temporary
d - I am the top performing sales person and if I did have to find another job outside of the niche; then I would not be able to perform to THAT standard as much of the work I do to achieve targets is currently outside of my standard hours and as such, is at the moment unpaid.

I believe that overall, me returning to a full time position in [insert company name] benefits the company, myself and reduces the need for recruitment of another part time person; and also reduces the additional work that the company will lose if I have to find another part time job elsewhere. It also means that I can concentrate on one position and put all my efforts into raising sales for you.
If you haven't got it - please don't flaunt it. TIA.

You could never prove that he has a problem with you because of having a child, I know you know that. The thing is that his business proposal does make sense. You and the other lady in sales would probably be able to hit the targets no problem once someone else is brought in to cover the marketing.

I think the others are right in that you should take a step back and not give so much of yourself to the business. I know how hard that is when you are a 'can do' person and I've been in situations myself where I've given and given and never been thanked for it. Occasionally you look at the people who work to rule pretty much and wonder why you don't work like them, but it would be too boring wouldn't it?

Think of it, if it really would be too much hassle to leave, as gaining a better work/home balance. When they recruit the other part time person, allow them to do things their way while you concentrate on sales.

If you try to think of this from a business perspective rather than a personal perspective it may make it easier to work with. At the same time you can always be on the lookout for other opportunities in your area over time that may not cause so much personal disruption. For what it's worth unless you've some clause in your contract about working for competitors or suppliers he can't legally do anything against you but obviously he can choose the suppliers any way he wishes. His threats are immoral but what could you do? I'm not sure a lot of these clauses even hold up even where they are in existence - how exactly do companies uphold them anyway?

I don't agree with the wording from Sambucas above though. It's too personal it is of no concern to your MD whether you need full time money or not, his concern is of current business needs only. I'm sure you know that when discussing these matters personal things should never be brought up.
  • Thanks again guys for the replies. Have slept on it, calmed down, done some calculations and tbh all the fight has left me.

I know I need to take a step back and just do my job and go home as much as it's possible to do that in sales. I am going to try and do this more.

I think I will try and manage on the 3 days. It's not that it's not possible for us to cope financially, it's just that we have debts (not behind or anything) which i had plans about paying back quicker.

In the long term I think I need to get out but I can't think how at the moment without risking everything so will try and plod along rather than giving my every drop of energy to them like I do now.

My MD is a very clever man and I think he has outsmarted me this time...
