Help - I'm being driven mad by Talk Talk!!

I was originally with Tiscali for my phone and broadband and then talktalk when they took over. Since being with TalkTalk I've had one problem after another. Since September 2010 my line has been terrible, volume up and down, crackling, hissing you name it we've had it! Don't ask about my broadband thats off more than it's on. When I've rang them I get put through to their Indian call centre and most of the time I find it almost impossible to understand the person on the other end. I have been told constantly it's a problem my end but low and behold as soon as I've spoken to someone in India it magically improves for a few days/weeks but I have now had no broadband for over a week (apart from when I'm talking to someone on the phone and then it magically works again but only whilst I'm on the phone! I've been promised it would be sorted out but so far nothing! Is their a phone number for Talktalk that doesn't involve India! They are now saying they may send an engineer to my house since it's not a problem on their end but I've changed my phone, the filter and the router. Do I have to pay if it's my line or socket thats the problem or is that covered by my line rental! Sorry it's a long thread but it's a long story! I'm using a dongle for this so I'm not on line constantly!

They are clearly in breach of contract.

Write to them giving them a specific time (say, 7 days) to resolve all the problems and state, if they do not, you will consider yourself free to leave without penalty charges.
Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.

I've never actually agreed to sign up too TT. They have kept trying to get me to sign up to an 18 month contract but I've always refused! But the thing is how do I know whether the problem is mine or theirs? Do I have to pay for repairs to wiring within the house/garden or is that part of the line rental price? I'm being told they will charge me £100 if the fault is with my wiring (garden + house) or socket. If I try and move from TT and still have a problem will another company charge me for the repair if it is within my boundary? Too be honest I just want a simple phone service with broadband is that too much to expect?

    Hi madmonk,

You may want to try this out to see if there is a problem with your line...

Thanks but the problem is I have no broadband at all! So I can only use the internet via my vodaphone dongle.

    Hi Madmonk,

Frustrating though it is without BB, you may want to try and post your problem on the talktalk members forum - they are all uk based and help out pretty quickly, just one small problem - you'll need to register if you haven't done already.

    Hi jizadine,

I've just tried to join the Talktalk forum but they are saying they don't recognise my talktalk account no & telephone number! I had 2 BT (openreach) engineers around yesterday they couldn't fix the fault on the phone line? They had arranged for another engineer to call this morning as the problem was in underground cabling? He arrived this morning and now says theirs no problem with line but he can't help with broadband as he's only called out for phoneline problems!!!! I have gone to use my phone and it's still as crackly as before! I've tried to get through to talktalk but I'm fed up being on hold! Anyone know if the fault with my non existent broadband could be causing the noise on my phone?

That suggests it's a problem with Talk Talk's equipment at the exchange (a not unusual occurrence).

Arghhh! I had a conversation with talktalk this morning, they remarked on what a poor line we had (Arghhhh) promised to ring back this afternoon. -just had my return call from them, they are sorry but they can do nothing until they receive a report from BT Openreach! They will hopefully be calling back tomorrow!!!! Can anyone tell me if I should receive compensation for all this hassle and lack of service.

  • Hi Madmonk

Yes, when you want to find out about others' experiences with Talk Talk people often tell you to refer to their forum. However you cannot post on it if you are ex-Tiscali! My sympathies about your problems with the firm. So far my own experiences have not been too bad; although I do live right next door to the BT exchange so I get relatively good broadband. However I am having nightmares with them when trying to help a 98 year friend. His bills were sky high as he was making daytime calls when on an evening and weekend tariff. He tried to change to an anytime plan and ended up with an unwanted broadband service. Despite cancelling it immediately, with proof, TT are refusing to remove the broadband markers; thus preventing him from moving elsewhere without losing a line for a period.

TT are supposed to be getting back to me today but I'm not holding my breath on that one! I suspect I'm going to have to leave and have no telephone line or broadband for a while and then start again with someone else! Which is really annoying when I had no problems with Tiscali it's only since TT took over that my problems started! Due I suspect to the fact that I refused to sign up to a TT package!
