frontier - a debt collection agency, left a message for me on my work phone asking me to call back quoting a ref number.
I phoned and quoted the number. They asked me to confirm my name and address details which I refused to do, as I don't have any dealings with Anglian Water nor Frontier and I don't know how they managed to get my work phone number (I work for the council).
They did tell me that the debt was for someone with my surname and someone who's name I don't know. I asked if they could tell me the town of the address the debt was registered to and they said a street and a town I have lived in before. This would have been back in 2004/2005. When I lived here, I was a lodger renting a room in a house with the landlady who lived there. All my bills were inclusive of the rent, so my name was never on any utility bills. I didn't confirm that I ever lived in that town and ended the call pretty quickly because I don't know what it's about and told them to send me a letter if they have my address details, which they have said they already have.
So i'm a quite worried about this now...and don't know how to proceed....anyone any ideas?

They're out of order on more fronts than you can shake a stick at. First thing you need to do is read this. oft664 - Office of Fair TradingI refuse to be afraid of the big bad wolf, spiders, or debt collection agencies; one of them's not real and the other two are powerless without my fear.
(Ok, one of them is powerless, spiders can be nasty.)
As of the last count I have cleared [STRIKE]23.16%[/STRIKE] 22.49% of my debt.

It's not your debt.
Even if it is, it's statute barred.
They're in breach of a fair handful the OFT guidelines on top of that.
And you've had nothing in writing.
Do nothing, and don't sweat it.
If you feel compelled to do something then check your credit files (all 3, experian, equifax and call credit) and see if any entries for it appear on your file.I refuse to be afraid of the big bad wolf, spiders, or debt collection agencies; one of them's not real and the other two are powerless without my fear.
