These are for Fixed Term contracts of 1 year at HMP Acklington/HMP Castington

does this mean the job is for only 1 year and then you go???

It means you have a 1 year contract that gets reviewed at the end of the year, in most cases they get renewed for another year, unless there's no work needed in which case they would let you go.

A lot of schools posts are on fixed term contracts and that's how they work, they get renewed each year

Fixed term means that you finish at the end of the time specified.

The previous poster's experience is that they get reviewed and renewed - but that's not what FTC actually means. So please don't have that expectation. Plenty of people have FTCs which never get reviewed, because the job is for a specified period of time, no longer.

Employers are much more cautious about renewing FTCs after a year, because after that time an employee has employment rights which they don't have in the first year.
