Small change to supermarket self check out?

Has anyone tried taking a jar of change to supermarket self checkout and tipping it in the new style coin collector?

No, but I quite often pay using small change. I guess it would depend on how much change you were thinking of. A couple of £ probably wouldn't matter, but more than that might.

I was thinking of tipping a small jar in. I suppose I'll give it a go if they don't know in the supermarket. It should be built to handle a fair amount.
  • Yes. Usually works, but managed to cause chaos when the 1p storage was filled, as it stopped counting and took the assistant 20 minutes to fix - mainly because I insisted that there was more than what was displayed in the machine. She expected me to be able to tell her exactly how much I had put in. Don't think she believed me until she opened the machine and about £10 in small change rolled out.

So always feed the money in slowly, a handful at a time seems to be best. Drives them mad because they seem to think it is a quick means of making money, but it's better than counting it out penny by penny into the hand of a bored 17 year old who thinks that anything under a £20 is dirty.
I could dream to wide extremes, I could do or die: I could yawn and be withdrawn and watch the world go by.

Aaah, haven't thought of that... I have taken small change to the old ones before (like £3) and fed it one by one, but I have like £10 at home now (OH's pockets) and this could work on such an amount absolutely fine..

I use up small amounts of change in them to make my wallet lighter as embarrasingy to do it normal shop unless its one or two coppers.

Though I would not do massive amounts if only or two tills and a big queue.

I find it easier to feed the small change into the machines you get in some banks these days - at least that way they have counting facilities if it does not work! Have to admit though, never thought of using it in the supermarkets!

I save those annoying 2p and 1p coins in a piggy bank and when I have a big pile of those, I bag them up and take them to Morrisons and feed them into the Coinstar machine. It gives me a voucher in return and I use it against my shopping
    Keep calm and carry on
