What to do next

Hi all

Desperately need some advice.
Currently, my husband and are I both working. We have debts of £34000 which we are paying off via a DMP.
The problem I have is that I really need to quit my job. It has become extremely stressful and I am feeling ill with the worry of it all.
If I do quit, this means we wont be able to pay our mortgage. It is already on interest only. We have never been in arrears with our mortgage but obviously our credit rating is shot to pieces due to the DMP.
Has anyone been in a similar situation? People probably think I shouldnt leave my job but I just feel so terrible at the moment. I am already on anti depressants.

Thanks for your help

    Hi strawberry blonde

Would it help if you could reduce your hours? OK, itwould still be a job you don't like, but it would still bring some money in and at least you would feel that you had taken a positive step.

It would maybe allow you to take a small part time job to make any short fall in money up and to keep applying for something else full -time.

Unfortunately if you feel that your job is bad and you dread going in then it colours your whole life.

Sorry I can't be more helpful.
  • Hi

Thanks for your reply. Unfortunately, my employers wont allow me to reduce my hours any further. I reduced them last year because I wasnt coping well but a further redcution wouldnt be possible.

But have you spoken to your employers/ line manager about your stress?
They have a duty of care towards you.

If there's anything they could do, they must do it.

You may be eligible for time off if you're on pills.

Or is it possible to shift to another department or another job within the firm?

What about your husband, could he do more hours?
  • Can you look for another job locally whilst still in employment, so that you don't have to lose the income?
  • Thanks for your replies.

I manage a charity shop. Initially I was taken on full time but after a few months became ill and was allowed to reduce my hours by one a day.
They were reluctant to do this in the first place and agreed to it on a temporary basis. The remainder of the staff are volunteers and if they cant cover me on my days off I have to work and then take time off in lieu at a later date.
They are already on my back because sales have dropped due to the recession and are putting more and more pressure on me.
  • I can quite relate to how you must be feeling, well not myself but my mum! She was a DSM for a Filling Station, The stress she was put under was unreal, they were completely unsympathetic towards her health problems too!

I think its definitely a case of getting another job quick smart before they reduce you to a complete quiverring wreck! (even if it does mean a pay decrease)

Hi - I would suggest starting at the begining to be honest. Draw up an SOA (budget) or a new one for what would happen when you quit your job. There is a good calculator on makesenseofcards.
First priority is to pay the mortgage and priority bills - ie council tax, gas, electric, food etc. - all unsecured creditors come bottom of the pile and if that means have to significantly reduce the amount you pay into the dmp then so be it - they can't have what you haven't got. You might even have to make token payments to the dmp for a while - I hope it is a free one and you are not being chaged for it at all?
Personally I think your health has to come first - life's too short and if it's making you ill. Before taking the plunge though and quitting the job I would look into whether you can leave on ill health grounds and whether your doctor will sign you off as this may mean you are entiteld to benefits that you might not otherwise be. Doing the SOA will give you a clear picture of how things will stand - hopefully the reduced dmp/token payments won't last long and you can get a new job as your health improves but it will also let you assess whether something like bankruptcy may give you a fresh start if things don't improve health wise.
Anway - do the SOA and pop it up and people can give their opinions :)
