Radiator or tumble dryer?

Hi

Now the winter is upon us with the wet weather what is the cheaper option of drying piles of washing?

On all the radiators at a low temperature or several small loads in the tumble dryer until theyre dry?

Hope this is the right board for this type of question.

Thanks

Tumble dryer is in garage & not sure if it would even work now.

  • For us, it's the radiators, but I guess it would depend on the type of stuff you're drying. If you've got loads of sheets, towels, heavy fabric (like denim), it might be easier / cheaper to just give it a quick blast in the tumble drier.........

  • I will only tumble dry towels otherwise they end up like cardboard !

I use the radiator to dry hubby's tops as tumble drying them shrinks them and he cant get them over his fat belly :D

So I use both in answer to your question !

  • I bought one of those stands which have three 'arms' coming from the top - for putting your clothes after ironing I think.
I put all blouses, shirts, tops etc onto hangers and hang them up on that and they dry quite quickly without stopping the warmth from radiators. Towels go over the banister on the landing!!!!

Depends. Towels & linen usually air off outside if isn't raining then in dryer. Have lots of clothes airers inc an over bath one so fill them up. Find that this is better than on radiator as I agree they seem to go stiff aswell as stopping the heat from radiators! I also have those things that go over the doors, usually get 8-10 items on there between the 2. Also can't put some of the kids and DPs things on radiators because of the transfers on them, lots of our things shrink in the drier like the kids uniforms so tends to be just towels and other linen. Anything left goes on radiators but I don't put them on specifically, just hot when they are on on morning and evening, so if anything to dry on them I put them on before bed, and I use the wire airers over them so I get more on there. I try to still get washing out when I can until it's too cold or wet to do so. I remember trying to dry outside one day last year and when I brought a pair of jeans in they were frozen solid and could stand up on their own.
One day I might be more organised...........

  • Last year I used the tumble dryer and didn't think about when I used it.

This year I have gone out and bought another airer, we have a conservatory which does get warm when the sun does shine so have been making the most of this. If it does get to feel like a laundry room, then I will be reverting to using the tumble dryer - but an night when the leccy is cheaper!

    Lol

reminds me of last few winters when we lived in a static caravan. Our washing machine and tumble dryer were both outside in a plastic shed and I would have to put my wellies on and paddle through mud and water over my ankles! When weather permitted the bits were hung on airers hung over the toilet window which on several occasions when the wind blew gusts would al end up in the muddy lake below it so ended up being washed all over again!

I didn't want to attach my over bath one so I bought one of these http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/images/B0001A9668/ref=dp_image_0/203-0860723-1410336?ie=UTF8&n=11052681&s=kitchen well similar from Tescos, can't remember how much it was, god send aswell, store it elsewhere when not in use, with it being in bathroom doesn't take up needed space and I can hide it when we have company. My stand alone airer is in my sons bedroom in a corner so also not in the way, couldn't cope with a laundrette in the sitting room/kitchen any more like I used to do.
