Job dilema

I'm curently in a good job but have to work away from home. Last year I earned just over £50K (basic 40K).

The job is going throuh a lot of change and although I'm assured there will be no job losses, i'm not 100% convinced. We've been lied to before many many times. Add to this my boss is very difficult to work with.
The only light I see in this tunnel is the changes may mean I end up with a different manager.

I've seen a job advertized local to my home address (same company, different department) but it's only 21K. I could manage on this but it would be a huge drop in wages and change in lifestyle.

I'd note my current job is far enough away that I need to rent accomodation. This cost being approx £4000pa.

Anyone had similar and can offer some sage advice?

Going to ring up about this job tomorrow and find out if I am eligible.

ps Should add my current job I'll get at least 6 months notice. No redundancy. New job is operational so would be pretty secure if I jumped ship.

    Hiya

I don't think there will ever be a right answer for your question!!

I found myself in a very similar dilemma a couple of years ago............I had a very high-pressured but well-paid job which I had been doing for over ten years. We all got wind that redundancies were looming and despite the promise of a good redundancy package, I was reluctant to just sit and wait it out, worrying about the inevitable. I got the opportunity to apply for another job, very local to my home. The other job had involved a lot of travelling - I was paid well for it but it all added to the pressure. The new job was office-based, a few minutes walk from my house but for a LOT less money. I debated for ages but in the end decided to take a chance. I was lucky - I applied and got offered the job immediately.

It was a fantastic job and I loved it!! I couldn't believe I had endured such a long day before and put myself under so much pressure. I think we all live withour our means and I found I quickly adjusted to the pay cut. Fast forward a year and the economic climate had deteriorated even further - the Government removed the funding for the type of work I was involved in and I ended up being made redundant............no redundancy package and back to square one!!

It's one of those situations that only time will tell...........looking back, I still don't regret the move as I realise how much pressure the old job had been putting on me. Quality of life and all that...........

Best of luck with whatever you decide!

I'd a similar decision to make when i turned 40.

I was a company director, but it was a high pressure role working 50-60hrs a week + 2 hrs travel each day plus i always seemed be on call too. I certainly 'lived the life' as it were - drove a new £50K x5, nice hols, great social life, etc.

Well we were building a new house out in the country anyway which was even further away from the office and i started thinking to myself that i was going to have this fantastic dream house and end up just sleeping in it.

So, i looked at my outgoings, cut what i could, got rid of the x5 and resigned!!

Big step, took me 3 months to get another job, but its 8 minutes from home and i'm home every night before 1700. We chill out every night and walk the dogs for an hour or so around quiet country lanes and have lovely relaxing weekends. I've also now the time for a hobby which is basically selling cars which i've always loved the idea of. Its bringing in a handy £600-800 a month and i've a choice of nice cars to drive - currently a (oldish) Golf GTI and i've a little two seater convertible in the garage for the weekends, plus whatever else i have for sale.

So far - its worked out. I dont feel i'm killing myself to live and i dont have to wait until i retire to have time to do the things i want.
