in Cutting tax
Hi my mother in law has just had an out the blue £4000 unpaid tax bill going back to 2006! like the ones the press and martin went on TV about last year.
She earns 17k before tax at the moment but does alot of overtime. She had a part time job four years ago in a school, maybe they think its still on going? Is the A19 loophole concession application still available? or have HM tax office closed it up? Shes had three diff' tax codes given to her over the years.
Any advice or can i get legal advice for free from specialist-tax accountants, some are listed in manchester on the say no to 0870 site.

You get cheaper advice on here. But only if you post some of the detail? 3 tax code changes in 4 years is par for the course - as the basic personal allowance has changed 3 times in that period.
Post the detail from each P800 for each year ..... and the equivalent P60 detail (pay / tax / Code number)? And someone will give you a view.
If you read the stuff with the p800 (P800 Notes / 'What Happens Next') ..... it does explain the options. But post the detail first as forewarned etc ..?If you want to test the depth of the water .........don't use both feet !0 -
Its OK now,she got a free accountant from a work friend who was related, its now only £1400 ! just shows how the taxman tries to rip you off by just "trying their hand".....its their mistake/incompetence/delay aswell ! he gave them a verbal bashing for an hour. GREAT. From 4k to 1.4k,just shows you, she'll pay it by monthly wage debit. UK TAXMAN LEECH LOSES.....MY MOTHER IN LAW WINS!0

more likely you have misread the P800's and added up all the years underpayments and come to an amount of 4000 rather than realised that any under or overpayments would have been carried forward to the next year, and the actual underpayment would have been display on the most recent years calculation.
There is no way, a calculation would have been appealed, revised and code issued in 16 days.
And if you think an accountant would spend an hour on the phone over a small case, whilst not being able to do their real job you are deluded. He's not an accountant - he's a charlatan0 -
What an arrogant answer !!,actually the guy spent the time on the phone while she was there listening, the mistake they made was thinking a minor school part time job she gave up years ago was still on-going......so they wanted tax from a job that didnt exist anymore. Isn't that up to the employer to tell the taxman......not her. God theres some knob-heads on this forum.
Thats the whole problem why people moan about the cost to the UK from tax avoidance, its a complex system here so accountants can get around it,if it was a simple system here they wouldnt f** k it up so much and ask people for more. Id tax avoid if i could.ALL your sacred politicians do.0 -
An hour is unusual, but half an hour is par for the course. Made up:
9 minutes - listening to pointless menu paths designed to rip you off for the benefit of the state
3 minutes - you've been put through but the person is on another call
3 minutes - the "producer" where you give your name, address, blood type
2 minutes - the person tells you you should have called another number
2 minutes - you tell them this was the number on your letter and they grudgingly accept they need to at least ask a few questions
2 minutes - they identify the right number and put you through
3 minutes - "producer" number 2
3 minutes - you explain whatever is on your letter and where HMRC have blundered
2 minutes - they try their best to fob you off
2 minutes - they accept you are correct and then 20% of the time they sort out the matter then and there, 80% you need to call another number or worse still write a letter
So there we are, 31 minutes with a 20% chance of resolving something that was probably easy peasy.Hideous Muddles from Right Charlies0 -

Interesting mistake because HMRC could only include income from that previous employment if that employer sent in a P45 or P60 with pay and tax details.
I wouldn't have been surprised if you had said they had included income from 1 employment twice though as I have seen that happen.:oThis is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0
