Meeting with broker tomorrow-anything I should know/do?

We have a meeting with a whole of market tomorrow evening. It's the first time we will have sat down and gone through things with a whole of market broker. Every other person we've spoken to has even been an advisor from the bank/building society or affiliated with an estate agent.

Are there any questions that are particularly important to ask or is there anything that's useful to prepare?

We don't have a specific property in mind. The main purpose in this meeting for us is to find out how much we can borrow and which lenders are most likely to take us on in our current situation.

The adviser will gather information about you, to help them recommend the right deal.

He'll explain his service to you, whether you will receive advice, whether he is whole market, or working from a panel, and how he will be paid. He'll cover consumer protection and regulation issues.

He'll go through different types of product, explaining how these meet the circumstances you've described and what the costs will be - both monthly and initial. He'll calculate what should be affordable based on your needs and circumstances helping you set a buying price range.

He'll go through the home buying process and explain what happens and when and what some of the jargon means. He might work through affordability with you at this early stage, so try to have an idea of what your outgoings might be.

Finally, he'll get an agreement in principle for you if you are ready to be credit checked at that point.

You then have the confidence you need to go looking for a property in a particular price range.
