Bars and pubs in Bristol

This is a kind of follow on from an earlier thread. I'm in Bristol for 24 hours tomorrow for my birthday and wanted to get some suggestions of pubs/bars for the evening. I'm thinking of something quite chilled, not loud music, people trying to pull, elbow to elbow kind of places. For pubs, something with a good selection of lager or beer would be good. Something well ventilated or smoke free would be a bonus. Can anyone suggest a place like this close to the city centre. Is there a general area that is good for bar and pubs?

There are lots up Whiteladies Road, and also along the Waterfront. I'm sorry I can't give any recommendations because I don't do pubs or bars any more ...

If you're coming by train there's a nice Wetherspoons just round the corner from the station. You would need to ask for directions because its a bit hidden away.

This place is great, one of the places I really miss in Bristol. The Hare on the Hill
If you then go further up, there's Redland where there's some excellent restaurants including the Redland Tandoori and the Red Snapper.

Glasnost Restaurant on King William Street in Totterdown (its left out of the train station) is one of the best restaurants I've been to.
