Not paid for hours over contracted hours

I've recently been asked to take on extra hours at work which I agreed to do. I've had my hours worked card back this month to find that I've only been paid for 72 of the hours I worked because I'm contracted to work 18 hours per week = 72 per month.
Can a employer do this? This month I've actually worked even more, but of course the salaries and wages department have sat on this information for a whole month without bothering to tell anyone!!!!
Can anyone offer any advice on my rights to be paid for the hours I've done please ?

I think tbh its an honest mistake.
Have a word with the relevant department and I'm sure they will put the matter right though probably you'll have to wait until next month.
If that's the case then it might be worth asking if you can have an advance, especially as it may muck up the amount of tax and NI you'll have to pay.2014 Target;

How recently is recently? You may have missed the cut-off date for processing their paperwork.0

I was asked before Christmas to take over the hours and it was confirmed early Jan. I took over the hours the last week in Jan. Card signed by manager and submitted on time. There is just a written statement next to the total hours worked to say 72 hours paid ( 18 hrs p/w max hrs). No mention what they intend to do about 12 extra hours worked.0

They are not allowed to just not pay you for the increase in hours. It might be an idea to have a quiet discussion with your manager and then finance to find out if this is a genuine mistake before you accuse them of not paying you though, sometimes paperwork isn't handled correctly!I was asked before Christmas to take over the hours and it was confirmed early Jan.
