MSE News: The Budget 2011: What the massive tax shake up means for you

  • I wrote to my local MP and thanked him for his chancellor saving me 35p a week on diesel. I asked him for suggestions regarding what to spend the money on. It basically went: Should I buy a couple of postage stamps before they go up on 4/4 or would you like to keep the money to donate to Quisling Clegg's Judas Fund?

    I wonder if I'm correct in thinking that the actual drop in fuel prices should be 1.2p per litre once VAT is factored in? Unfortunately the garages seem to always have a .9 on the end of the litre prices. I can't see it dropping to .7. There is a garage around my way that has .8 on the end of its prices. However, although it's 0.1p per litre more, I tend to top up at Sainsbury's because the nectar points mean that it's a bit cheaper there once they are factored in.

    For their next trick watch them start taxing nectar points.

    The BBC(Radio 5) very early this morning said that National Savings Index linked Savings Bonds were being re-introduced, and Winter Fuel Allowance was being cut.

    Can see nothing about either in the Red Book.

    Was I dreaming, or???
  • You were not dreaming the NS bit, as last night at about 17:45 an excited reported broke into the general tone of the programme to report what he had found after an afternoon of research - I think you have to put two sets of figures together to work out what is proposed.
    (ie the need to pay (say) 6% interest on the borrowing to cover the extra deficit that seems to be cropping up).

    Basically the West is finished.
    The Far East will take over as the centre of power, finance & influence within a fairly short time as they have the motivation & the manpower to do it.
    All we can do is make the most of it while it lasts.

  • We need to stop fighting other people's wars for a start.
    Why cannot the Arabs sort out their neighbours - we have sold them enough armaments.

    You are also correct about winter fuel payment.
    It seems last year's payment included a voter bribe which won't be repeated so

    250 -> 200
    400 -> 300
