Curtains - not long enough!

I've been given some curtains for my huge patio doors (250cm x 250cm) and they are just short by about 10cm. There is is no spare in the bottom hem so can't lenghten them this way.

Does anyone have any creative ideas??

Thanks

Becky

why not get a coordinating fabric and add a border along the bottom. Then make some cushions in the same coordinating fabric to 'tie -in' the curtains to the rest of the room.

  • That's what I was going to say - or you could look out for some wide ribbon remnants! How about big tabs at the top? or are they track ones? Or is there any hem at the top? it will mean taking the curtain header (sorry, memory block can't remember the right name) off but it my work.
But I'm going to say this once, and once only, Gene. Stay out of Camberwick Green :D

If they have curtain tape along the top there will be a large turnover usually , it would mean taking the tape off letting the hem out and then reattaching the tape on a narrower hem but could be done...

Or with contrasting fabric attach tabs at the top and then get a curtain pole and slide the tabs over the pole thus lengthening the curtain by however much you need (length of tab could be variable)..:T

I did this but instead of adding it at the bottom where I thought it would be an obvious add on, I got a local seamstress to put in a panel about 10 inches from the bottom of the curtain and if looked great, only cost me £15 in total for the extra material and the money to do this (I am hopeless at sewing so would have cost me to get it added on anyway!).

Adding it at the bottom is the easiest option, and if you do it double (folded in half and pressed, so the folded edge forms the bottom of the curtain, that gives it weight and makes it look deliberate.

And tie-backs and a cushion cover are a great idea.

Are you anywhere near a Dunelm Mill shop? They have coloured curtain lining that's decent quality for £2.99/metre.
  • Thanks for the tips folks. I have the same problem. I just moved into a new place and all my old full length curtains are a foot off the floor! I can't afford to replace them all as even when you make them yourself it gets pricey and one set is only 18 months old.
