Mackenzie Hall

Hi everyone,

Just need a bit of advice regarding the above if possible.

I am currently on a dmp which was set up about six weeks ago. Last week I received a letter from the above about sending doorstop collectors unless I call their number and quote the reference needed to pay what I owe them.

Anyway, to cut a long story short I have not got a phone at the moment, so instead I sent an e-mail to the above explaining that I do not have a phone at present, however I am happy to discuss their letter via e-mail. I quoted the reference number they gave and left it at that.

They have got back in touch with me saying to proceed further via e-mail they need me to confirm my personal details: name, address, date of birth etc etc. The question I have is should I give this information? I know it sounds strange, but I have heard many people say that giving information like this is you effectively acknolwedging that you owe money to them etc.

Any advice would be appreciated!

Frankly they can put everything in writing to you - proper snail mail. If they don't know you are the debtor in question then they can't send someone round to your house can they - surely they should know what debts they've bought - it's not up to you to tell them how to do their job. And absolutely no way would I be providing date of birth etc to them - just in case they acidently start putting your name/details against other debts etc with a similar name.

Are you actually paying MacHall anything under your DMP yet? or is it that they might have bought one of your debts.
Personally I wouldn't give them any of the info they have requested.

There are letters you can send that request all further communication is in writing and to stop them visiting you at home. I would send these and then wait to hear back from them.

    do it in writing
  • In my case, my original creditor informed me that they had passed my debt on to Mackenzie Hall - I think you should contact the original creditor for confirmation that this has happened before you do anything.

Other than that, I second everything that has been said above. I have dealt with Mackenzie Hall in writing and it has made the situation far more manageable.
  • Thanks for the replies.

Just to clarify, my creditor has not notified me as such. Mackenzie Hall sent a letter to me, which said at the top that I owe X amount to them, and specified which creditor the debt related to initially. In other words, it is clear that the debt has been passed to them by my intial creditor.

I would start by sending the prove it letter. If your creditor hasn't told you the debt is being sold on to MH then you need to get a notice of assignment from them that proves they have a right to collect the money.

Once they have proved this then you/ your DMP provider can send the payment to MH instead of the original creditor. Its usual to send a budget/SoA as well to show that the payment they are getting each month is their fair share.

I'd still also send the letters regarding contact in writing only and no doorstop visits.:)
