Tax write off question

in Cutting tax
Reading the article Thousands more could get tax written off using HMRC loophole on MSE I called up my tax office and advised i was never made aware of any errors etc and i dont think i should pay... they disagreed and told me i have to pay this back as i had two tax incentives in one year when i changed jobs (one tax incentive with my previous job and one for the current job).
My argument was that i never knew neither do i calculate my tax and therefore i should not be penalised for it.
They said it still stands and wondering if there is anything else i could do or if this is the final decision?
Thanks

Initially what year was the underpayment from ?
What were the tax incentives - I presume you mean benefits in kind.
If you are receiving benefits in kind did you notify HMRC so you could be taxed correctly at the time, or did you wait for the P11d to be processed after the end of the tax year which would create an underpayment. He's not an accountant - he's a charlatan0 -
I recently received a letter from the tax office stating I have underpaid tax to the amount of 843.27 from 2007. When I contacted them they said it was due to a 2nd job I had. Though I had to complete a form stating I had 2 jobs, so I did not think there would be a problem. Due to this being from 2007 I am wondering if this can might possibly be written off. If I write back appealing.0

Im learning -a bit late- all about tax codes!! ive been told by the tax office that my first employer did not inform them of my status in 2007 (not true) and because of this ive recieved 2 sets of allowances (on my first and second jobs). both employers have kept the tax office informed but as they are different tax offices it wasnt picked up. i owe £2500 over 3 years. both employments now have my tax code as Base rate, but am i going to get stung with a bill?
I concede ive made a grave error in not studying tax codes and must pay, but as the tax office took effectively 3 years to spot this, i dont think its fair that i pay back in only one year, comments please can i go for ESC A19? or some form of deferred repayment?0 -
The incentive im referring to is tax allowance in one year (in 2008). So as an example i received some allowance from my prev employer and when i started my new job i must have received the same incentive again (when i started in 2008 in the same month).... I was never aware of this neither did i do any tax calculations as its always left with my employer??0
