    Hi complimentschemistry.

I feel your pain regarding this. It's soul destroying to go into a job that you hate everyday.

My situation was slightly different to yours, my boss was fine but the actual job was melting my head. I had handed in my notice as I was at the end of my rope (with no new job to go to) and worked most of it when my manager persuaded me to reconsider and try working reduced hours. It has made a huge difference.

I realise that you probably don't have a supportive management system but would it be worth asking them to reduce your hours? Less time there = less stress and it gives you more opportunity to search for new jobs, attend interviews, etc.

As far as I know employers aren't obliged to give reduced hours but should be required to consider it. Ie you have said this is affecting your health so could you get something from your doctor? Do you care for any children or elderly relatives as this might also be taken into consideration? Does anyone else in the organisation work part time? Do you think it would be better if you were part time?

Having said all this, when I did resign from the job, (which I didn't leave in the end) I had been planning it for some time and had made sure I had savings to tide me over for a while.

Make sure you think carefully about leaving with no job to go to. I know you have said you don't have many outgoings but with no income at all most people would struggle - I think JSA might be sanctioned for up to 26 weeks if you leave a job.

I hope you get this sorted as I really feel for you.

Selling the car to fund your life whilst being unemployed won't make finding a job any easier at all. Whilst it's horrid at the moment, stick with it and job-hunt like mad. Who knows, you could get lucky in the meantime and the manager you don't like may leave.

It will be twice as easy to get a new job while employed, so I think you have to stick it out.
When you look back you will be impressed with your fortitude!

Remember that you are in control of your life, and the bad boss is an annoying parasite.
  • dmg24's post struck a cord with me, sound advice for you to aim to adopt I think. I've been unconsciously doing it for the first time in my current role & it does work.

Try to stick it out until you find something else. Competition for jobs is fierce and quite demoralising trying to land something whilst unemployed. Even temping can be difficult to come by. You'll be just as fed up during that search as you are now!

Do your best to bite your tongue with boss, let it drift over your head, just sit & think of it as working towards a better reference for later.

It IS always easier to get another job whilst in employment but I know how you feel.

I left my last job without another one to go to. I handed my notice in and they said I could go at the end of the next week.

It was basically a problem with one of my bosses and the HR manager there also was not qualified and not experienced and with issues like grievances she would have had to go to my bosses anyway. There was nowwhere for me to turn. I had to go because I risked blowing my top and making it worse for me in the future.

I would've done any job whatsoever but as it turned out I got another one within weeks and I'm still here 5 years later. It was better paid,on better terms and everything worked for the best.

I think it depends very much on what sort of work you do.

    OP

Firstly - I know what you are going through - I was in the same situation, I didn't kike the boss, didn't like the work and was getting stressed out and working long hours etc, but nothing was ever good enough for the boss.
I had been looking for a job for near 6 months before I left.

If I was doing it again although, I think I would just leave - no job is worth making yourself sick over, like I did, stress can cause the onset of many problems - some which may not clear completely, even when the stressful situation is removed

I still get on well with the people I used to work with, and they have all commented on how much healthier and happier I look.

    My advice is
    1) Go and see a doctor and tell them how you're feeling, maybe they will be able to support you through it
    2) Discuss leaving with your parents, as you are living at home - are they happy to support you while looking for a job etc. Do they have a car that you could get access to, if you sold yours and then had a job interview to get too?
    3) Consider how unhappy the job is really making you, write it down on paprer - how much longer can you put with it - then if you really feel it is necessary - hand in your notice - you may have no money but you won't regret it (Also while you may be sanctioned for JSA - you will probably be entitled to hardship payments)
    4) Keep a written record of everything the boss does which you consider unfair and give a copy of it to your boss, take it to the CAB or employment solicitor and ask if it is grounds for constructive dismissal.

    Good luck

  • I would slip into the conversation ' I'm sorry but I feel like I'm being bullied, now that might not be your intention but... it's beginning to effect my health' hopefully the bully will notice the possibility of an ET coming over the horizon.
  • Thanks for everyone's amazing feedback on my post - I'm having the most awful day at work today so I'm feeling less and less like sticking to the job and just want to walk out! My boss clearly doesn't like me as, unlike everyone else, I don't kiss his a*se to get ahead or flirt with him to get ahead. He favours the kiss a*sers and the only other person in my department who doesn't do it either is always getting dragged into disiplinary meetings, etc. I don't want to end up like that so I'm begging everyone I know to find out about work for me... it's all I can do not to walk about at the moment!

Does anyone know what I can do if I feel this way, is there any organisations who can help if you feel you're being treated badly at work?

    Thanks
