Red debt collection

Hi
I have received a letter for an outstanding amount of £535.83 from Red,originating from Three Mobile. I rang Three today quoting the original account number on Reds letter, and found the default amount is actually only £14.88! Three have said I can pay this to them but, before I do,does anyone know if this will cancel the debt to Red?
Any help greatly appreciated

does the letter from red say they have been sold the debt?

if they have then paying three won't get rid of it.

that huge amount has got to be challangable though should red now own the account?
  • Letter says Lowell Portfolio have asked Red to collect the debt on their behalf, although I have never received any correspondence from Lowell and believe them to be part of the same company.

    Hi,
I am having exactly the same problem with RED/LOWELL. I paid my Three Mobile acc off in 2005 (£278 and it was an early settlement figure), back then it was with either Moorcroft or Wescot.(99% sure it was moorcroft) Never had any correspondance from RED/LOWELL in the past. Then yesterday I received 2 letters from them stating that I still owe £95 odd to Three from 2005!
Iam now in the process of trying to get proof that i paid this debt in full but have no original ref numbers for wescot or moorcroft so they cant help me. I have got a three ref number but I have been told just to leave it as I shouldnt have to prove to them that I paid it, they have got to prove that i havent!
Still worrying though...and im quite hacked off more than anything!!!
And RED/LOWELL did not get this debt passed onto them from three til august 2008!
I honestly think that they are just trying their luck...

Teenybeeny I would pay 3-Mobile (if it looks like they still own the debt) and then argue that there is no debt as it was settled direct with 3.

Murtle1981 if the debt is over 6 years old (check the exact date) or over 5 years old if you're in Scotland, then it's statute barred. If it's SB or close to it (within 6 months) start another thread as SB debts can be dealt with. You may have been tricked into a kind of settlement which did not close the debt as well. By starting a new thread you're more likely to get the attention of the MSE-ers with the technical knowledge to help.

As of the last count I have cleared
    [STRIKE]23.16%[/STRIKE] 22.49% of my debt. :(

    Hi Hannah,
I did start another thread yesterday and had some very helpful info from there but thanks for suggesting it. I paid this debt off 13th May 2005 (i know this due to my credit file) so it is very very close to being 6 years .
Im just getting conflicting advice at the moment-ive been advised to leave it and make red prove that i havent paid it and yet my DMP people say ive not to ignore it and must try to prove that I paid it. So what do i do?

For £95 it is not in thier interests to take you to court unless they think it will be a no contest pushover. After the 13th of May 2011 they can't take you to court anyway (they might threaten to but if they do they're lying). So I would start by making sure they realise I'm not a pushover and sending the prove it letter. Did anyone link you that?

Someone in the other thread did mention the prove it letter but no link. Could you link me it if possible please?

Thinking about it, the debt is actually over 6 years old as I was paying it by postal order for at least 3 months before I paid the outstanding balance off in may 2005

http://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/...93&postcount=2 << The prove it letter.

It's going from the age from the last time the debt was paid or acknowledged, not the first.
