Well if you're going to make sweeping statements such as Windows doesn't jsut work then you should back it up with proper research rather than just making a generalised statement based on a 10 year old OS. Obviously you have no interest in objectivity and would rather just tar all the Windows OS's with the same brush based on an experience of installing an old bit of software on a modern PC.

What sweeping statements? I commented on the install of windows on the netbook, which didn't work. What more research than that did I need to comment on this one instance? Objectively windows did not work after installed it.
I have windows 7 starter on a netbook and it runs just fine. I'm not going to do any taxing on it as it is a netbook but it can play movies, let me surf and work on spreadsheets and documents without any issue. I also use knoppix on the same netbook at times and it also works fine. If you're finding Windows 7 starter slow and crippled I would suggest you are doing it wrong as it seems to work in a perfectly acceptable fashion for what it is intended to do. Yes linux will provide better performance on a netbook in general but in the day to day tasks I use a netbook for I find no noticeable difference.

Win 7 starter is not crippled? Try changing the background without third party software or a trip into the registry. In fact try and personalise its default appearance. Not multi monitor ability. Theres more if you want to google, basically as Hammy was saying Starter isn't "fully fledged". Starter is intentionally crippled.
Wow I'm wrong? This must be why Dell, Acer, HP, Asus etc. have all released linux netbooks. Maybe you should try looking at reality before crying wolf that M$ aren't letting OEM's do things there way. Advent installed an old OS, Advent are the only ones responsible. They had other options available they went with XP for the sole reason that they thought they would sell more with XP installed.

Thats all well and good but tell me, at the time the advent was released were your above mentioned firms also releasing XP machines as well? I wonder why that is? Could it be microsofts aggressive licensing terms, no other windows available, or the customers?

Its not advents fault customers wanted windows, microsofts only viable operating system was 10 years out of date and microsoft power over manufacturers. Not to mention TechGuys can't fix a windows pc let alone linux.

I seem to recall going into PC world back then and being told linux was a free version of windows.
    Such wit.

Glad you enjoyed it, you should try more with yours because you started it as the playground saying goes.
I run multiple OSs of both the linux and windows variety. I'm not a zealot preaching one OS above another and am quite comfortable on most OSs. Unlike your goodself I try look at things objectivley and like to base opinions on experience rather than what I have read on slashdot.

My opinions in this thread are based on experience, did you read the first post?

I'm pretty sure I didn't read about myself installing XP back onto a netbook and finding it wanting on slashdot.

I have a netbook that was supplied with XP - it's fine.
I have a licence for Windows 7, and also Linux distros, but the netbook (an HP in my case) is fine as it is, so it's sticking with XP.
The reason the netbook manufacturers release machines with XP was that it is leaner than Vista and they were producing (relatively) low-spec machines.
The issue with some of the manufacturers beginning with "A" is that they don't make it easy for people to install an OS, and it is devilishly hard to get the requisite drivers.
They seem to do that on purpose, maybe they think it'll make people pay them for repairs.
