Maybe you're not actually old enough to remember what Windows 95 was whereas I'd been in IT for over a decade by then.

I see, so you're a relative n00b. I thought as much. You're lack of experience gave you away.

Oh dear. You know a thread has hit rock bottom when people start calling others "n00bs".

I don't get the point of the thread, having to reinstall drivers after installing XP is almost routine and normally doesn't take long. Linux distro's may be better at hardware detection now, but it wasn't that long ago when it was impossible to find a lot of hardware drivers for linux because they didn't even exist whereas Windows had them all included.

To the OP, you can try them on Lubuntu if you like, but as they can't fix their own PC, they probably aren't the most knowledgable of PC users so they'll probably struggle when you introduce a new system and they'll run into all kinds of problems. In the end they'll probably take it to a computer shop to be "fixed properly" because their mate/family member had a go but couldn't do it :)

I'm sure the OP said he was "TEMPTED" not that he was going to. That's quite a distinct difference. Much like "DID" and "THOUGHT ABOUT" but hey, reading, writing and comprehension may not be a strong point with some of this threads contributors. :D

Did I say the OP was GOING to put Lbuntu on it? No, I was simply giving an example of what might happen if he DID... seeing as the OP said he was tempted to.
Ironic that you mention other people's reading, writing and comprehension skills!

    Ouch ... but.....>

But did I say YOU specifically? Nope.. I'm sure I said:

    You're right - it IS ironic.........:rotfl:

The tempted is in a present tense, not the past.

    Thought About - Past
    Thinking About - Present

I was tempted - Past (what you say the OP said!)
I am tempted - Present (what the OP actually said!)

Maybe you need to brush up on your reading, writing and comprehension skills? :)

At the time that he wrote it , he did indeed say "I'm tempted" (allow me to correct your expansion) - but as he made the post YESTERDAY MORNING, the context of what he said is now in the past tense.

Glad I could help you with that :D

Windows even now has very few drivers included, hardware manufacturers write the drivers for windows, which not that long ago they didn't do for linux. So what you mean is it wasn't that long ago linux had to write its own drivers.
To the OP, you can try them on Lubuntu if you like, but as they can't fix their own PC, they probably aren't the most knowledgable of PC users so they'll probably struggle when you introduce a new system and they'll run into all kinds of problems. I will try them on Lubuntu. It wont hurt or cost anything and will extend the life of the netbook.

Not being able to fix a PC doesn't mean you can't learn how to use a different operating system. Or is being able to fix hardware issues a prerequisite for switching OS's?

If they want it, seeing as its up-to-date and runs faster, I'll set it up for them. No one I know would have a problem selecting the menu scrolling up to chromium to browse the internet.

I don't see why they would want to get ripped off at a computer shop?
