    I agree, surely if it's for contacting them then a basic el-cheapo model should be good enough - however i'd excersise caution here, as your trade is engineering (a wide label by any means) this could also denote a reliance on their mobile to email/check online for certain things.

    10K on phones however is crazy, simple, if they want a phone they can chuck about like a brick then they can buy their own! It's fair to suggest that if these guys were taking out the latest iphones/blackberry which they bought themselves it would survive quite easilly, so remind them that it's a piece of company property and as a result is their responsibility to protect in the same way they would say a company van/tools. We all know mistakes & accidents happen, but 10k is more than a few mistakes & accidents!!
